AMHO Barber Hone?

I found this in my drawer. I guess I did pick this up as part of my score from SWMBO's uncle. What weirds me out about it, it says to use the name side wet, and finish on the plain side dry, but the name side has the name carved into it!

Bigger ones on my flickr page here. Anyone familiar with this particular hone? Should I follow the instructions in the box and use the carved in name side?It doesn't seem like it's different on both side, should I just use the flat side wet, then dry?

I'm no expert on hones . . . but how can you argue with the manufacturer's instructions . . .

I'd give it a try on a razor that you don't mind messing up if the worst happens!

Really a neat looking old hone!! Congrats on a unique find!

I would use it exactly as per directions. You have little to lose if your technique is okay. As long as you keep the spine in contact with the stone, it will be hard to damage the edge. Worst thing likely to happen is that your razor will get polished on a surface not quite down to the edge. You will have had some experience honing, and will not have caused any harm.

You may get lucky and create a shaving edge with this. I would not waste time using the dry side until you can shave arm hair with the razor.

I'm thinking I should probably lap it a wee bit on some 600 grit paper or something. Just to be sure that it's flat, especially over those letters.
