I have seen every episode of Top Gear and have been hoping it would come here. I watched ~10 episodes of the Australian version and gave up on it because it was horrible. Unfortunately, the US version looks equally bad. Hopefully I am wrong.
I didn't click the link, but I've heard grumblings of an American Top Gear for years now, including rumors of Adam Corolla, Jay Leno, and the blond guy (Eric?)from HG TV who I can't make any connection as to why he would be on a car show. I thought it was dead already. If attempted, it will be bad. Some things are better off left British.
But agreed that the dynamic of the show is strong because of the guys chemistry. I didn't like the Australian Top Gear either. This one? Didn't see enough of it.
Meh, looks ok I guess. Will not be as good as Clarkson, May, and Hammond. I hope they don't take it off of BBC America, and replace it with the History channel version.
I was talking about this last night with some friends about the reason's the US show will unfortunately fail.
1-Hosts. 90% of the British version is the chemistry between the grump, the pretty boy and the anal retentive.
2-Commercials. British top gear is a solid 55 minutes. They can take their time during segments and you never get the feeling they are in a rush to wrap something up.
3- Reputation. TG Great Britain has earned the reputation as a car lovers show with some of the best drivers driving them and talking about them. Collector's who privately own 1-2million dollar cars are willing to lend the show their cars because they know they will be honored and taken care of.
4- The cinematography and audio scores of the British TG, both on big budget movie levels and neither of which did I see an example of in the trailer above. For example, I doubt we will be seeing anything like this on the American version

Again, hopefully I am wrong, I am a car guy and rarely watch TV except for this show. Perished made the well reasoned comment that it may take a few seasons for the show to gel and come into its own so, that is what I am hoping for.
I am hoping that this US version will be successful. The host with the beard and glasses is named Rutledge Wood. He does some work for the Speed channel for Nascar broadcasts, and he has a large fan base from Nascar Fans.
Ok, I watched the clip. It looks amusing and would probably garner some genuine interest, had it been an original show rather than a knockoff of the institution that is the real Top Gear.
I think part of the allure of the original TopGear is the fun of hearing the regional insults and sayings that are outside of what we hear in America from day to day. Trashing on the car purchasing habits of Footballers, Parliament members, talking about MOT and making fun of the French. It's foreign and fun. Hearing a 'typical American looking guy', dressed like an indie album collecting college kid yell "Dude!" isn't part of that.
The other part that will take the fun out of it will be seeing cars that we already have a level of familiarity and probably some form of opinion on. I don't want to see Cavaliers, Escorts, Voyagers, Continentals, and Omnis on Top Gear. Lame foreign cars are far more interesting than lame American cars, if for no other reason than we already know the extent of lameness belonging to those made here.
I heard an interview with Clarkson and he said he has had several offers to do shows on American tv but has turned them all down. He said he can say and do things on BBC that he wouldn't be allowed to do on commercial tv due to commercial tv execs being too worried about losing potential advertising revenue. That could be one reason why other versions of Top Gear fail. Hopefully, for you Americans, this new version isn't sponsored by Hyundai.
