I tighten the dial all the way down so that dot lines up with the one. I then untighten it past the three until I get to the three again. Am I essentially shaving on eight or am I shaving on what is three for everyone?

Three would be un-tightening to the first "3". No idea what once around again would technically be.
I'm pretty sure when someone says they use it at "3" it's the first one they come to.

Yeah, that is definitely not what I would consider '3.' 3 for me would be tightened all the way down, then back up to 3 the first time around, like mer said. Not sure what I would call it, but if it works for you keep going with it.

Yes, that would be 3 + 5, or 8. I'd guess that would be pretty aggressive.
