You can use only one razor, brush & soap/cream during one shave and it takes time to learn to use new product well. I thought that should limit the buying if the budget was not the issue. This hobby has something to offer for decades to come.

OP: Seems like you have a pretty sensible approach to me. I'd also say you got fairly lucky in finding things that worked well for you right off the bat. I had to hunt around a bit before I found my preferred setup, but now I've settled into a nice, relatively low-budget routine and my den looks much like yours.
Well, I only have 12 razors, 8 soaps, 1 cream, 8 aftershaves, a block of alum, a giant jug of witch hazel, 6 mugs, 3 bowls, and 3 brushes. But that's ok, because I've been at it for awhile. Since late December, 2010.
