B&B Interviews - Meet Member Alum Ladd

137113.jpg

@Alum Ladd has been a member of Badger and Blade since Oct 26, 2021

01. How did you find Badger and Blade and why did you become a member?
I had been toying with the idea of taking up DE shaving for a good long while, and I found searches for many things always took me to B&B. There was a mass of historical and technical details here, which I just read as an enjoyable resource. After I bought my first complete set up in the summer of 21 I would often visit to read comments. After a couple of months I thought why not join, if you are going to make a damn fool of yourself, why not do it on the worlds premier shaving forum? So, here I am. The members are amazing. Welcoming, generous and independently-minded.

02. When you did or if you are working, in general what did or do you do?
I worked for 3 decades getting some of the most disadvantaged folks good jobs, if they wanted them. It could be tough, as I had to work with small employers, as well as some very big brands, in order to get them on board. I was able to get most who I negotiated with to co-operate and it developed a momentum of it's own. I like to think I helped a few thousand families over the decades to improve their lives. I'm proud of that.

03. What part of the country where you were born do you like the most?
Tough one. When I was a kid in about 68-71 I lived in Southend On Sea in Essex. That was some of my happiest childhood memories. It had the longest pier (boardwalk) in the world, at 2.5 miles. I suppose it is closest to those New Jersey ocean side places that New Yorkers would go to for a day by the sea. At the moment it is the country around a town called Battle in East Sussex. It has a great forest a few miles outside where we camp in the spring summer and autumn.

04. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Probably Singapore. But as would have to be the Singapore of the 1930's, and as time travel is out, I will go with Southend On Sea.
There is a little town called Damascus, in Virginia. We have always wanted to see some of the Appalachian Trail and to live in a small U.S town.
It seems a really laid back place, and Mrs. Ladd and I would like to set up a small English style cafe (pronounced 'caff') These are close to U.S Diners, as they were in the 40's-90's, except they open early and close around 3-4pm. Most specialise in English breakfasts, which are excellent. We will serve English breakfasts and bacon sandwiches to hikers passing through. We would also sell hiking supplies and equipment. We can dream.

05. Do you have any hobbies or pastimes?
I like the outdoors, camping, a little bushcrafting, wildlife. I love history, aviation, I like a good book, and a game of chess is nice. I like a good beer, and yes, old Gillettes. 'Arko! scent research'

06. Why did you choose the avatar that you have now?
It seemed like a good idea. I was drunk at the time, but I think it's holding up ok.

07. If you could choose any person in the world, now or from the past, who would you like to sit down and have a drink with?
Granddad on my mum's side. He passed when I was little, and by all accounts, there was something magical about the man. I do have an interesting family.

08. What is something you'd like to do, but have not had the opportunity to do it?
Live a year in the woods. Get to be one with it. The wildlife, seasons. Corny I know. True though.

09. What is one thing or accomplishment in your life that you are proud of?
See #2.

10. What is one piece of advice that you would offer to people in general?
Always wear fresh underwear. You never know what the day may bring. And try to shave.

11. If you could have any super hero power, what would you choose?
To open cans and bottles, just by looking at them. Modest, but useful.

12. If you had to choose to be a kind of animal, what would you want to be?
At the moment I favour sloths. Both the 2 and 3 fingered ones.

13. What kind of music do you like?
Anything that has a catchy tune, and is capable of being played on a kazoo.

14. If you could be any movie character, who would you like to be?
Roadrunner. Roadrunner cartoons make me laugh.

15. If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the Title of that book be?
The Book Of Heroic Failure.

Thanks for sharing about yourself, Alum. It sounds like you had a very rewarding career. The world needs more like you.

Great interview Alum! The less fortunate individuals that you helped place in employment is a profound accomplishment, and your reward at the end will be even better!
Please hook me up with a fry-up!
Thanks for providing us the insight!

Is a bacon butty and a bacon sarnie the same thing?
Hi @Dominic. Deep question. It is a North/South thing I believe. Sarnie is very London, Butty seems to be strong in Yorkshire and beyond.

I very much appreciate the kind and generous comments from colleagues. It means a huge amount. I only got back last night from a much needed camp out, and was very surprised and cheered by the interview being released and the kind responses! Rather too tired (exhausted) to comment coherently last night, so I thought I would wait a few hours.

You all mean so much to me, as colleagues and generous friends, generous with your time, experience, and so much more. Joining this forum has in some ways been a life-changing experience. It has restored my faith in human kindness, and as to what we really are if you peer through the murk of the news, and much of the internet.

It humbles and warms me, and I often seriously wonder if I am worthy to be among such a company of true Gentlemen.

Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.

Some things just need an answer. 😄

I used to watch Last of the Summer Wine (set in Yorkshire), and sometimes they would go to the caf’ and order a bacon butty. Every now and then they would say sarnie. I thought it might be a synonym, but for all I knew it could have been a different sandwich. I live in middle America, and we just say bacon sandwich, or BLT if you get the lettuce and tomato.

Great interview. Did you ever know any old beekeepers when you lived near Sussex?
I have never had the good fortune to meet Mr. Holmes, but I hope to, one day.

It was an excellent film, very faithful to the chronology. Imaginative too in pushing the canon to a Sherlock battling old age and the loss of his powers. I am a great Holmes buff to be honest!

I was as a young man, belonged to the Double Barrel Tiger Cub Club at the University of Illinois back in the late 70s. Used to read Harrison and Starret and Baring-Gould and have weighty conversations smoking English blends with friends.

Holmes is the single greatest detective ever written into existence.
The modern take on Holmes with Cumberbatch on the BBC is excellent.
A fabulous update made without sacrificing canon.
