Alum as Deodorant

Yes. It is a deodorant with it's anti-bacterial properties killing bacteria that causes odors and may reduce some perspiration but not all. Wet it under cold water and then apply.

Alum blocks seem to last forever and I think it might be better than that spray on stuff ... I plan to give it a try too and will let you all know.

Does it work if you have hairy man pits or do I have to shave the armpits like a girl?

That's all you have to do. I've been using the block for well over 20 years, and there's never any B.O. The stuff works great. :thumbup1:

These guys introduced me to the Thai Crystal stick, which is alum in a clear form. It works great, even with gorilla pits.

From my experience, it works well but is not perfect (I still get a bit funky sometimes). One thing is great though - no irritation from aluminum as with over the counter anti-perspirants. Yes, wet the block and apply. Use the Thai stick or Crystal brand, as it is the type of alum better for underarm use v. the kind used for shaving, although I think both work.

Imma try a straight alum block.

I have a reserve Razorock alum block for my face post-shave. Is this the same as a Thai Crystal stick?

Been using it as a deodorant for almost a year. Works great except on really hot days which is when I have to switch back to traditional products. Once cooler weather comes, I go back to it.

Another benefit I find is that the pits of my dress shirts do not have that yellow staining and/or crusty stiffness to them as when I used anti-perp/deo products.

At the gym today the travel block I keep in my bag slipped from my hand and smashed to many small pieces on the hard tile floor. I went right to my health food store and bought another one to put back in my gym bag. I swear by these, never an BO at all.

...I happen to use Crystal and it is a great product for after shaving and as a deo. Also, I enjoy the hassle free use, smooth twist-up stick and replaceable cap!

Yup, works pretty well. Key is, as has been mentioned, to make contact with the skin, and to keep the pits trimmed. I used it successfully for several months. For some reason, I've switched back to Tom's, my old standby. Either way, I follow it up with a deo spray on the rest of the body.

I've been using it for a couple of years, no problems. Another tip is to wet your pits, not the stick if you use the Crystal brand, above. If water and alum start dripping down into the mechanism, it stops working. As mentioned already, one of the nice things is that the armpits of your shirts don't get stained.

By the way, I discovered in the store the other day that the purple version in the photo is the girl version. :) They also make a clear plastic tube container for real men. Same stuff's inside, though.

This has always intrigued me. How well does it work?
Depends on the person and how well that person follows the instructions. For some it just won't work. For some it doesn't work because they think they can apply it in the mornings like other deodorants. You really have to apply it just after getting out of the shower in my experience.

Bingo. I bought this stuff to use on my face, hated it there. Tried it on the pits, magic! Although i do notice a slight sour smell if i sweat heavily but thats only if i stick my nose right in my pits intentionally trying to sniff them.

It works applied any time, but obviously for any of the salts to be transferred, it must be whetted... whether you whet your pits or the stone.

I generally use the Crystal roll-on. I apply it at night when I get out of the shower, and again in the morning while getting dressed.
