Alfred Sargent shoes

now that i've gotten my first taste of English shoes with my C&J purchase, i'm thinking my next impulse buy might be a pair of Alfred Sargent Derbies. I really like the Stratford or the Stowe models.

does anyone here have experience with AS shoes and the 99 last? my C&J's are a UK9.5 but I could've gone down to a UK9. i'm wondering if I should go a half size down with AS (I normally wear a US 10D).

my other dilemma, I've taken a shine (no pun intended) to the Stratford in brown, although, I have no idea what this would be appropriate with. I think it would look awkward if paired with a suit, so i'm thinking it would look great for dress casual, like wearing to church or going out to a nice restaurant. it's the same with the Stowe.

anyway, your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

The Stratford looks like a great dress casual shoe -- good with anything from a blazer or sportcoat to jeans and an OCBD. Perfect for church, or dinner out. I just picked up a pair of AE Strands in walnut -- a brogue, not a split-toe -- for the same purpose. But I really do like the look of the Stratford in brown.

You have picked an expensive hobby! :001_tt2:

Personally I am not keen on those split-toe models; I'd much prefer a captoe or plaintoe version. That's just me though, so ... :wink2:

The general impression I get is that AS is a slight step down from C&J, although I have several rebranded AS shoes done for Brooks Brothers (Peal & Co.) and they seem fine.

Sorry, I've got nothing to say about the last.

my impression of AS (from the AAAC forum) is that the quality has improved exponentially and is fast becoming a competitor of C&J, Trickers and the like. the other thing I like about these derbies is they're a little under the $250 range, which makes them more accessible than other English shoe companies. i'd love to own a pair of Edward Green or John Lobb shoes but they're way out of my price range. and I think if my wife knew I spent $1000+ on a pair of shoes she'd kick me outta the house :001_unsur

my C&J's cost about $350 which is by far the most i've spent on dress shoes, but i'm going for quality from here on out. no more cheap dress shoes from Macy's for me
