What's new

Aidan Gill?

I like the place for it's aesthetics, ties, wetshaving supplies, etc, but I wouldn't reccomend for a hair cut. The one time I went, I was #1 kind of put off by the all female barbers and penthouse magazine combination. It's just not really my style to look at that kind of thing around middle aged ladies (playboys maybe). #2 the haircut was pretty wack and cost $35 (I paid 25 at my reg salon right down the street). The guinness was nice, however.

It was a number of years ago and perhaps their staff has changed since. Aidan is definitely a good guy as anybody who has spent enough time drinking in the LGD will tell you. It can't really hurt to try, and if you prefer a barber shop style hair cut to to a more modern one it might work out great for you.

I like the store on Magazine St. better than the one on Fulton but both have a great selection of soaps/cremes/etc. Lots of fun to go with the wife as she likes to smell everything and then make recommendations to me on what to get. It's a hoot to watch her and the sales ladies comment on things.

I used to live in the Lower Garden District, literally right around the corner. So I stop in for a visit whenever I go home. I like the store - it has great charm and is the source for quality shave gear in New Orleans. What's more, Aiden is a very nice guy.

Haven't gotten a haircut since all that I require are some clippers set to 0.

I used to live in NO as well (Lakeview {Yes we moved before Katrina, thank God}) and my wife bought me a shave at Aidan Gill for my birthday or some other occasion. Awesome shave, and I liked the haircut as well (although it is not a bargain). Nowadays I always go in for a hot towel shave when I find myself in New Orleans with some extra time on my hands.

But dont they shave you with a Mach 3?

Yes they shave you whit a Mach3, witch is quite weird.
And he say to always wash your face before shaving whit soap, but it as been prove that soap dry your skin , it is better to wet your face whit only hot water.
On top of that, he say to use pressure when shaving:blushing:
Btw the young kid who shave in the video have's no beard before shaving, he look to be like 15 years old.

Yes, they use a Mach 3. We have had this discussion before and it may be that straights are illegal in LA, or (and I think just as likely) few barbers nowadays know how to use a straight with high confidence. You can use pressure with a Mach 3, hell I don't know if you really can cut yourself with one of these things anyway.

The hot towel prep is the key and the shave really is BBS. Hard for me to get that BBS myself, but then again I don't do a prep with 7-8 hot towels.

He says and let me quote.. "Let me be clear, the modern multi blade cartridge razor is far far superior to anything that has come before it. And anybody who think different is quite mistaken." He also says the best way to keep from cutting yourself is to apply PRESSURE to the blade. Lack of pressure will ensure cuts and a poor shave.
Ugh....this guy must work for Gillette.

Yes you can cut yourself whit that.
Before switching to DE i was using a Mach3 and it was so irritating that i had to wait 2 days before having another shave.
I remember myself coming out of the bathroom after shaving and my girlfriend looking at me like:eek:, seeing all the cuts i had.
I don't say Mach3 doesn't give a close shave but personally it's more irritation.
