Aftershave or cologne?

I've been using Pinaud Clubman and love it, but figured I would try something different so I ordered some Pinaud Citrus Musk from westcoastshaving. They have it listed under their aftershave section. I was reading about different scents etc and noticed the Citrus Musk is actually called a cologne. So, what is it? Does it matter? Will I get the same cooling effects from Citrus Musk as I do from Clubman?

Welcome to B&B AlanP64!

Many of the Pinaud aftershaves are listed on the label as "Aftershave/Cologne", when they are simply aftershaves with more "staying power" scent-wise than most. The Citrus Musk is as much of an aftershave (and, for that matter, as much of a cologne) as your regular Clubman. Seeing as how both Clubman and Pinaud Citrus Musk are alcohol-based and both contain no menthol, they will cool and refresh you in a similar manner. Different scents, though, to be sure--Citrus Musk starts out with a citrus blast that mellows down to something akin to freshly-laundered clothes on most guys skin.

...And, no, it doesn't matter one bit what's on the label--as a matter of fact, Pinaud also makes two "Hair Tonics" (Eau de Quinine and Eau de Portugal) that lots of guys use as aftershaves/colognes. As you will soon learn, Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV), so feel free to experiment and let us all know what works and doesn't work for you.

Again, welcome to the finest and most mannerly bunch of folks on the whole internet. You're gonna love it here!!

Alan and welcome aboard the B & B (besides being enrolled in the fictional, sacred and utopian Order of Shavedom). Please feel free to come up to the promenade / sun deck &
'sit-a-spell' (...Yeah Baby!!!).

Sounds like you're well on your way to 'shaving nirvana' and The Zen of Shaving (http://zenhabits.net/the-zen-of-shav...nge-your-life/), but you know what...this Forum has the knowledge, ideas, and all around 'know-how' to assist in your Wet-Shaving experience. In a nut-shell...your 'gonna' love it here.

I thinks it's more of a misnomer (than that of being a 'real' eau de cologne). While aftershave (AS), products contain an astringent (alcohol-based), which closes the pores of the skin, improving the appearance of the skin, and helps prevent infection, some AS products contain a moisturizer. If not, the addition of glycerin will fix this problem (I add about 8-10 drops of glycerin per 6oz to my 'go-to' Citrus Musk and mix 2oz Royall Lymes for a 'long-lasting' scent)

Also, AS will have alot less (percentage wise), essential scent oils than cologne which is why AS will not have a lasting effect than colognes and don't worry...you will get the same cooling effects from Citrus Musk as you do from Clubman.

Cologne on the other hand, I believe will have a concentration of between 3%-15% essential scent oils and/or aromatic compounds (mainly citrus based), and is great for making you smell nice and does not have many other properties such as a AS. The higher the centage of essential oils...the longer your cologne will last, and the less you need to apply eventhough your own nose will become accustomed to the scent and you will think it has worn off.

By the way, what brand of tools (razors, blades, brushes ect...), are you working with?

Although, you may not be additted yet (I think I'm holding up fairly well...with a few exceptions), because we all suffer (gladly and are doomed perhaps), from this shaving complusion (and other Acquisition Disorders), because at times..."Resistance is futile".

Thanks guys. As far as tools that I am using:

My foray into the DE shaving world started out of curiosity. I have used typical canned shaving cream and cartridge type blades such as Mach 1 thru 30 etc, vibrating, aloe edged lubicrated strips, you name it. I could never get a decent shave. Oh, they shaved close but they also pulled and tugged and were just completely uncomfortable. I was searching on the net for shaving methods, tutorials etc to see what I was doing wrong and came across several DE shaving posts from B&B as well as other forums. That lead me to searching Amazon for a saftey razor. Saw a video review or something of a Merkur 180 long handle. Price seemed okay and worthy of an experiment. So:

Merkur model 180 long handle.

Initially ordered a 10 pack of Merkur blades. Figured the razor was a Merkur, why not try the blades. Found them to be "Okay". They were at least less apt to tug and pull as a Mach3.

I got curious about "What's the best DE blade there is" like every other noob that comes across B&B. Saw lots of posts advising to buy a sample pack. I bought one that had Feathers, Astra Super Plat I think, Crystal, Personna, and Derby Extra.

Brush:
Had a Van DerHagen or what ever from Wal-Mart I had bought a couple of years ago. It's cheap but works okay.
Found a Shea Shave or whatever at Target and gave it a try but it is so limp and floppy I found it useless.
Bought a Semogue 1800 and I think I am going to settle into using it for a while because I really like it.

Soap:
Colonel Conk Bay Rum-I like it, see no reason to trash it for somethign else simply because I want to try something else. I'm sure there is probably better but this works well enough that I will use it till depleted.

My beard isn't super coarse or super thick. I guess for lack of a better description, my beard is a difficult beard. From my jaw line up, it's a snap to shave. My neck area thoug is a completely different story. It's like Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde combined into one face. A two face for you Batman fans. The neck whiskers grow in about 40 different directions it seems. I try and break them down into sections or regions and shave WTG, XTG, ATG but it is really difficult to do. No matter what technique I use, prep, blade etc I simply cannot shave every day. I can "Get by" shaving every other day. My face just doesnt adapt well to every day. But, I'm still experimenting with things to find a way to get there.

On the blades, they all seem to work well with the exception of the Derbys. I just cannot use these. I'm not going to say they are horrible blades becase what works for me migh tnot work for someone else and vise-versa. They simply are not for me so to speak. The Astras, Crystals and Personna reds are about the same for me in regards to how well they work. The Merkurs, maybe a step below them. The Feathers seems to work the best for me.
