Aftershave + EdT/EdP combos?

Quite new to the B&B here, and have a decent size collection of fragrances already. I took up DE shaving for a couple weeks now, and after a few tries, discovered that I would like an aftershave to help sooth the face after a 3 pass go (getting much better by the way). After reading a lot around here I discovered a whole new world of scents that I have not experienced because well...they're aftershaves. I finally settled on Captains Choice Lime as a blind buy and like it so far. The scent itself is nice and it feels good. The problem is that the scent does not have the performance, and I like to wear something else everyday as far as my Edt's go. Since I love my fragrance collection I still want to wear them daily without clashing scents. What do you guy's do. Skip the aftershave, find a good combo, or buy the accompanying aftershave balm for your perfumes? Is there an unscented? Any insight would be appreciated. Also any suggestions as to some really nice aftershave scents? Thanks

The scent of most aftershaves is weak enough that I rarely even think about it, or if I do I just try to stay in the same ballpark (e.g. citrusy aftershave with citrusy frag). I've never once worried about truly "matching" the two.

+1. I never really worry about matching becasue as jpipes3 mentioned, most of the aftershaves out there are weak enough to not interfere with the cologne choice. Complementary scents are always best, but matching is not something I try to really narrow down.

I don't try to match them exactly, although I get a kick out of using the matching aftershave with a given EdT from time to time. Dior Eau Sauvage, Guerlain Vetiver, Guerlain Habit Rouge, AdP, Hugo, AdG, TOBS, T&H for example. One thing to note is that my skin responds very well to the typical matching aftershave lotions which usually contain alot of alcohol. I like a high alcohol splash, some don't. Beyond that, I just follow what jpipes3 said above about staying within the same family of scents.

another +1 here. This is it.

I mix and match, but almost all my fragrances are a spicy oriental, so it's not hard to do. I use Jack blacks double duty face moisturizer or cvs's knock off brand of aftershave first, then follow with my scented stuff.

Forgot to add that when I buy cologne, I try to make it a gift set, so it comes with the colgone, aftershave, and shower gel. That way if I want, I can smell really good on a night out.

Most colognes that have been around for a while do have an aftershave balm and/or splash available. Some examples include Cool Water, Terre D'Hermes, Eau Sauvauge, Antaeus, and so so so many more. I do like to stick to one line just to avoid having conflicting scents or creating some funky new scent by accident! I'm a bit anal when it comes to this so I do keep it in one line. I even pay attention to the type of shaving cream and/or soap I'm using (fresh/citrus vs. woodsy).... but that's borderline OCD.

For those of you that use Speick AS, do you combine it with lemon/lime scents? I find the scent of Speick quite long lasting and don't really think it goes well with lemon/line.

Now half as wise
Although my Edt choices are modest, I rarely worry since most AS scents are very short lived for me. For truly unscented I would use witch hazel, or one of Thayer's products. Lucky Tiger AS is very short lived and although doesn't contain alcohol, is a very nice AS splash.
