Advice with my first SE Shave

Hi !!!
This post is to get a fast response since i'm planning on shaving in about 2 hours with my SE for the first time (I usually use a DE)

The friend that got me the SE (Thank you again Regularfella) one time showed me over skype how i was supposed to hold it and he pointed that it's a different technique than the DE so ... if you guys can advice me or point me to a good video tutorial or a previous made post about this, i would appreciate it !!!

I just got my first SE a week ago, have no had five great SE shaves. Make sure you have a blade intended for shaving - my first attempt was with a crappy blade I found in a drawer. I went to Walgreens and CVS and picked up some better blades and that made all the difference. Beyond that, I don't find the technique all that different. Make a couple passes on your cheeks until you find the right angle and you're good to go. I've got an MMOC and the angle is almost with the razor flat against my cheek - just raised up a few degrees. The correct angle was pretty easy to find by sound and feel. With a rigid blade it's pretty intuitive as well - the blade isn't bent so you know what angle you're cutting with. From there, I shave the same way I do with a DE. I'm really impressed, some of the closest, least irritation shaves ever this week. Good luck.

The biggest difference is the shave angle. An SE blade should be held very close to parallel to the skin. NO PRESSURE! You think they preach the no pressure mantra for DE shaving? Pressing in with an SE blade will result in some serious bloodletting. Enjoy the shave. It's a different but thoroughly enjoyable exercise.

Which SE razor will you be using? Regardless you should search for the video by MrGuy on using the OCMM. Enjoy it.

I used a GEM FeatherWeight with a GEM blade, my soap was EJ Aloe Vera and I don't really know the name of the brush.
It was a great shave ... the angle as pointed out by "dcobranchi" was different ... more parallel to my face and after that I just followed the sound and feel of it.
It was a great shave, different process ... I think I have the "no pressure" technique down already ... almost let the air hold the razor :D
It's a great shave, not a single nick, being that aware of where the razor is, I got to be more precise. I will try next time with a different soap and with my semouge brush.

Thank you all for the help.

SE razors suck and you guys are fools for even trying them! (What, that didn't work? Dang it!)

OK, SEs rock. Seems like the cat is out of the bag. So much for all the great buys on E-bay. grumble.

When I use SEs I try and keep the angle what I consider to be very shallow against the face. Meaning, I start out with the head of the razor almost flat against the face and then just bring it down slightly until the blade edge JUST contacts the facial surface. You might have to experiment a bit, but you'll figure it out.

BTW, as far as I'm concerned, no blade from a drug store can hold a candle to the Ted Pella SS PT coated ones.

I'm a big fan of the Gem OCMM and the Ever Ready '24. Both are great! I own six each, go ahead and run the price up on the 'bay. I don't care! LOL.

Have a great time.

John

Sounds like it was a good idea to ask before shaving. SE and DE are two different animals.

Both should give you a perfect shave but you have to handle each differently to get to the same place :001_smile

Sounds like it's time for a replate, just for fun of course.
