I am in almost the exact same boat. I don't want to travel with my straights, but also don't want to spend a ton on another system...

Since the OP wants to avoid checked baggage, that means one of two things.
Bring a DE and buy double blades when you get there.
Of if "there" is a place you revisit, mail a set of gear there and leave it there. I do that with two places I revisit. A wipe with oil when you leave will protect everything.

I recently came across a Gillette shavette that was evidently manufactured in limited quantities for distribution to barbers as the hygeine laws changed. Anyone heard of such a thing or know of a source?
