Adjustables

I've decided my next razor will be adjustable. So what's preferred--the vintage Gillettes or the new Merkurs? Are there any other adjustables out there? For the vintage, I saw one at an antique store that looked like I'd need a tetanus shot if I dared to use it. What do I need to look for in a vintage to know it's worth buying?

Thanks!

I've said it before, (not more than a couple hours ago) and I'll say it again. The Gillette Fatboy is probably the most well-designed, well built and most versatile razor ever made. Merkur adjustables are great, but for your first, get a Fatboy. Set the bar high.

I like the gillette slim adjustable personally. When you purchase a vintage make sure the adjustments click firmly in place. Make sure when the TTO knob is tightened you can get 1/4 turn "lock down"twist on the knob still. Also make sure your doors operate smoothly and the blade gap is even. Other considerations are merely aesthetic.

I've never used a Merkur but I really like my Gillette Fatboy and Super Adjustable. As far as what to look for when buying a vintage adjustable all you really need to do is check that the both the TTO and adjustment mechanisms function properly and that the safety bars aren't bent. You will be surprised how nice those nasty looking old Gillettes clean up with a little Scrubbing Bubbles.

Go for a Gillette slim adjustable - less pricey than the Fat Boy and the head is smaller (more maneuverable) for better shaving under nose - also, as is with a fat Boy, will last your entire life if proper care...and no drops to the floor!

I recently acquired a K2 (1965, second season) Gillette Slim adjustable, and I like it a lot. Very comfortable in the hand and easy to get a very close shave. I wish it were a little heavier, so I might look into a Fatboy at some point, just to compare. But it's a darn fine razor.

I would go for a Gillette Slim or Fatboy,I like the Slim for the longer handle ant the slightly smaller head, you will not be dissapointed with either, maybe keep an eye on the bst section on the forum for one
