What's new

Adjustables are boring!

I've come to the point where I pull the Gillette Slim Adjustable and Merkur Progress off off my rotation.

Not because they're bad. But because they tend to be always in the same position where I like them best. To me they won't imitate other razors and after playing and shaving with various settings they're superfluous.

I'm not planning to sell them but I might aswell do that and never look back.

The ability to adjust and leave it there is what makes the adjustable razors so good. For me, to use a really sharp blade like a Feather or a Personna 74 I must use an adjustable razor and set it low at 1 or 2. I get great shaves this way whereas I would end up a bloody mess if I used said blades in most other razors.

I love my adjustable Futur and Progress! The Progress has it's annoyances but once you set the blade correctly it's great, and the Futur provides great consistency. I may set mine to 1 or 1.5 on average but occasionally I'll bump it up to 2 or 2.5. I think adjustable razors are like having multiple razors in one. You can spend hundreds of dollars buying other razors but why waste the money when you can customize it!

Life is too short to not enjoy your razor when there are so many different ones to experience.

Having said that, my best shave is from an adjustable that I found the right number that I never change.....but that is my shave....now go find yours.

Enjoy the adventure........

My experience is starting to mirror Dharion's. I use my Fatboy less and less, and instead opt for my Mühle R89.

Personally my fat boy set on 9 is my perfect razor. If i could find a non-adjustable that was equivalent to my fat boy on 9 it would be my new favorite.

Then being "stuck" with one setting on a fixed razor must be BORING-ER:lol:

You know where I PROUDLY stand:thumbup:

Dietmar, you are wise not to sell your Slim and Progress right now. You have hear the old saying, "What goes around, comes around." there may come a time in the future when you will want to put them back into you rotation.

My shaving nirvana came when I pulled a 1963 Slim out of my display cabinet. Now the Slim set on 5 is my go-to razor. I get consistant BBS shaves with several blade brands. I just love my Slim. As Pal said, it is best to hang on to it. You just never know....

You gotta do whatever works for you. If adjustables aren't your cuppa team, that's fine (sell me your Slim!)

My experience is the opposite. I've tried the Parker 22R, a Red Tip, and two Superspeeds, and none of these come even close to the pleasure I get shaving with my Slim and Faboy(s). The only other razor I use besides my adjustables is one of the Chessman NOS Merkur Slants.

Mark, I'm salivating over your collection.

What model is the "shorter-black handled" adjustable (third from right) and the gold one (second from left?)

Also, is there a good time I could come over and take a look at your collection? You don't need to be home. Just leave a key under the mat.

Adjustable razor offer the advantage of being able to adjust when required. So, when you have a bad shave, you can dial it down for the next day's shave. You can also dial it up as your technique improves for extra close shaves. In addition, it can be set for a custom setting. It certainly saves you the effort of going through several razors to find the one that best suit your face.

I get my best shaves from an adjustable (Fatty). My WTG pass is set on 9, ATG is set on 7.... can't do that with a non-adjustable

At any rate, nothing wrong with taking them out of rotation. If you like something else better, use it! :thumbup1:

Great collection! That 195 has me turning a nice shade of green. Seems to me you might be missing the all-metal Super Adjustable (or is that it on the right? hard to tell from the picture.) That model is more respectable than its plastic -y bretheren.

Regarding the OP, I could not agree more. All my adjustables are gathering dust in some drawer. Boring!!!

I may be in the minority, but I do change the settings on my slim and fatboy between passes. First pass gets "3", second gets "5", usually. It's almost like shaving with 2 razors. I've noticed that when I throw a souplex in, I need to start at "2", so it makes switching to blades that feel sharper a little less jarring a transition from what I was using the day before.

To read this on the day when I received my shiny slim boy :w00t:
