Adding water to Fountain Pen Ink

What are the 'pros and cons' of mixing a little water to fountain pen ink to obtain a certain shade or tint? Feathering at the edges? Flatter pigment color?

Some people like the performance of heavily saturated inks, such as Noodlers, better thinned down a touch. I concur with the advice above and would just add to decant some ink into a vial to experiment with rather than adding water to the whole bottle. Add a few drops at a time until you have it dialed in. One of the joys of fountain pens is the ability to mess around and customize.

The only times I've added water is in an emergency. A couple of drops can allow me to continue writing a couple more pages if no ink is readily available.

I have a fond memory of adding a bit of water to a Sheaffer cartridge in the boy's bathroom so I could complete an essay in junior high back in the '60s.
