What's new

Adding a New Scotch

Good Evening Gents,

So I have discovered a new rabbit hole, largely thanks to B&B.

To date I have tried the following (ranked in order of preference):
  1. Glenkinchie 12
  2. Macallan 12
  3. Laphroig 10
  4. Famous Grouse
  5. Balvenie 12 Double-wood
  6. Oban 14
  7. Balvenie 21
  8. Balvenie 15
  9. Glenlivit 15
  10. Glenlivit 18
  11. Glenlivit 12
  12. Glenfiddich 12

I have bought a bottle of the top 4 listed, but would like to round it out with an even 5 bottles to choose from (not to say I might not make it an even 6 later). What am I missing, that needs to be there? Is there a specific flavor profile unrepresented that just can't be missed?

If it helps any, I find a large gap in desirability between the top 3 and the others I've tried. I look forward to your thoughts.

Don't forget Lagavulin

If you liked the Laphroaig and Famous Grouse you tried, look for a bottle of Black Grouse. It's a great combination of the two and for $20-25 bucks, you can't go wrong. It's a great bottle to have around for friends when you don't feel like breaking out the big single malts but don't want to give them a swill blend.

If you like famous grouse get a bottle of highland park. It is one of the single malts used in FG, and definitely the dominate flavour.

I second the Highland Park recommendation. It's a wonderful single malt that sits between the Speysides and the Islay malts.

I think I'm going to wait out the Lagavulin until my Laphroig is gone. The Arbelour sounds interesting and HP has been on my list to try. I looked for Black Grouse when I bought the Famous but my local store didn't carry it.

I doubt I'll get to the store before Friday, but I'll update once I get the next one.

Have you tried Laphroaig Original Cask Strength? If you like Laphroaig 10, I heartily recommend it.

Went to the store tonight and picked up a bottle of Arbelour 12. Good stuff so far, I'm going to compare it to Macallan tomorrow night. My initial thoughts are that it is somewhat similar.

Try the Ardbeg 10 when you run out of Laphroaig. You could also, unless you're bent on drinking only Scotch, try an Irish Whiskey like Bushmills or Tullamore Dew.

Or go even more exotic and trying the Japanese Yamazaki! I've never tasted it, but reviews are generally insanely positive.
