What's new

Actual dimensions of a new Chubby 1 2 band knot?

I am very, very suspicious about the knot size of my CH-series brushes.

My CH1 feels like a 20mm knot, and my CH2 feels like a 26mm knot.

Of course, the ridiculous size difference between these two brushes is something I've gotten riled up about before...

I noticed your earlier thread and searched on CH1 size knots to no avail..I have a 28mm Shavemac which often feels too big but does a good job lathering with creams. Heard so much about the CH and after staring at your sale for hours on end...I think I'm going to launch on a CH1 at some point. Really looking for a good soap latherer in the 22-23 range...so, naturally the CH1 gets a serious look.

When I saw VB say it was 25...I was shocked!

I can't be sure about the official knot size, but it definitely feels very small to me, smaller even than my 22mm Rooney 1/1 in Finest because of the fan vs bulb shaped knot.

The knot on my CH1 is very similar to my Rooney 3/1, which is supposed to be 22mm although I've never measured it myself (got both brushes from Vintage Blades if that matters). Maybe it's a little bigger - say 23mm, but nothing more...

I'd lean towards 23mm for the CH1...I'm pretty darn sure it ain't 24mm since I have compared it to a re-knotted 24mm in a similar loft and it's smaller. Somehow, I don't believe they'd drop the size to 22mm and when compared against my Emperor 2, the CH1 knot is visibly larger.

Hmm, very interesting - my CH1 feels much smaller than my 3/1 because of the slightly taller loft, fan shape, and increased density on the 3/1.

I had another look at this during my morning shave; the CH1 2-band that I have is a definitely larger knot size than my PJ2, Emperor 2 and Rooney 3/1 Finest...all three of these are 22mm knots. Whether's it's a 23mm (my guess) or a 24mm remains to be seen.

I couldn't find a caliper...not sure if I have one lying around in the garage...will have to defer this test to somebody with a CH1 2-band AND a caliper! :blush:

Fendrihan lists the new CH1s as 25mm. With a tape measure, my original CH1 looks more like 23-24mm.

Fendrihan's numbers:

CH1 = 25
CH2 = 28
CH3 = 30

My CH2 is a Vulfix, and it conforms to the listed 28mm size.
My CH3 is original, and it also conforms to the listed size of 30mm.
But my CH1 (original) looks more like 23-24mm.

Thanks for the information Mike. I'm pretty sure it's not 25mm, and equally convinced it's not 24mm or 22mm. Somebody HAS to have a caliper lying around!!!

Just wanted to close off this discussion gentlemen...I came home with a caliper today and measured the Simpson Chubby 2-band CH1 as well as the CH2, both recent purchases from westcoastshaving. The CH1 loft measured in at around 48.5-49mm with the CH2 coming in around 54-55mm. The CH1 knot is a healthy 24mm and the CH2 knot is a whopping 28mm.

I was a bit surprised with the CH1 since I was convinced it was a 23mm knot...!!! Hope this helps...

I think my Chubby 2 2-band is measured at 28mm. The thing with measuring that I wonder about is when someone is using the calipers are they getting the knot as condensed as possible, or are they putting it just tight enough for it to slip on and off somewhat easily when measuring?

I could go in quite a bit on my Chubby 2 and get at least another 2mm down on it, and more I'm sure. I don't remember and it's semi packed atm.

Thanks alot for doing this! Now we know at least one data point...I'm guessing there is some variation in these from the manufacturer....but we have a ballpark.
