5. I have served on various bases, and deployed twice. My favorite deployment location was Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory. A little speck south of India and East of Africa. The island was covered in coconut trees and lined with what looked like white sandy beaches (but was actually sharp coral splinters - painful in bare feet). It was the opposite experience when I next went to Baghdad, Iraq, which had no beaches or coconut trees, and everything was covered in dust.

Homeport Norfolk. My first night at sea aboard the USS South Carolina CGN-37 we had bad weather and 40 foot swells. Every time the sonar dome breached and slammed back down it shook the whole bow from side to side. Guess where our berthing quarters were? I ate a lot of crackers and wished I had joined the Air Force like my Dad did. :)

My last days of active duty were spent floating around in the Strait of Hormuz with the carrier group during the Iranian Hostage crisis. Nothing special
duty wise except for drills all the time, Iranian jets buzzing around. We joked about how if they attacked us it would probably be with an Exocet missile we had sold them.

Thanks to all for your service.

To paraphrase the promotional material, "The 3rd US Infantry Regiment is the Army's official ceremonial unit and Escort to the President of the United States". Performed ceremonies for Presidents Carter and Reagan, White House ceremonies for many heads of state and visiting dignitaries, US Bicentennial celebrations, traveled thru-out the country in support of Army functions. Highlight of my service was trooping in the colors for the opening ceremonies at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY as seen worldwide.
