Abusive blades and your experience with them

Needs milk and a bidet!
I just want to rant about the terrible blades i've tried so far. I'm amazed at how vastly different each blade shaves. I use the same Merkur 34C razor when i try new blades and every blade gives a shave of it's own. yes i understand razor blades are completely subjective and these are my own opinons on the crappy blades i've tried.

so far i've found 2 blades that i absolutely refuse to use a second time. Bic Chrome Platinum and Dorco New Platinum.

The Bic blades were so terrible i changed the blade for the second pass. There was a lot of pulling, and skipping with them and it was only a 2 day growth. But after the 1st WTG pass i was peeved and switched blades to an Astra SP. I ended up PIFing the remaining 4 Bic blades i had. and i made sure to PIF them to someone that knew what they were getting their hands on.

The Dorco i just used was just as bad, this time it was just a 12 hour growth...yes 12 hours! hardly any thing to shave, but these blades were jumping all over and tugging my skin like i was pulling them through a hay field! Thankfully i only had 1 of these. I finished the shave with a 2nd WTG pass as there was no way i was going to take these ATG. and to top it off i nicked my nostril! aggrrrr i was in a hurry to finish the abuse and caught the corner of my nose while doing my upper lip. damn dorco!

i feel a lot better now that i got that off my chest...and face.

I picked up a pack of generic store brand blades here... "Top Care" is the name on the generics. The blades are printed "Made in the US", so my best guess is they are made by Personna, only skipping the steps like coating, polishing, sharpening? I made it through 1/4 of the first pass and tossed the blades. It was like a jagged glass blade followed by a strip of sandpaper feeling. Only cost $2.00 or so for the 10pack, not worth crying over. I kept the pack for a blade bank, but refused to try shaving with them again.

I'd have to say that my worst blade experience was with a Merkur. And even that wasn't as bad as the other two experiences above. I think that speaks to the fact that there are tons of good blades available, and not many that are just total duds.

Derby's in a tech gave me so much irritation, burn, and bumps that i had to shave electric for almost a week. They sit in a drawer now, waiting for a new home.

For me, out of about 20 brands I have tried, the absolute worst blades are...

BICS!

I gave them not one but 3 or 4 attempts, all of them gave me tons of weepers and irritation

Well, points to you for dedication to thorough testing, that's for sure.

I have to agree on the BIC's they gave me my worst shave ever! Serious skin irritation and the burn when I applied aftershave was intense! I also had about the same experience with Gillette 7 Oclock Green.

Some decent blades can be really harsh in the wrong razor. For example Gillette 7OC green in 38C and Lord Plat Class in Fatip. Don't let the alum block out of your sight.

For the first couple of years of wetshaving I used a Merkur 38C almost exclusively. This is the long handled 34C. I found that this razor brought the best and worst out of a blade. I cannot figure it out, but some blades that work great in other razors were very harsh in the 38C. Blades that worked well, were generally OK to use in just about any razor. At this point in my shaving experience, I am less curious about what the 38C tells me and use it sparingly; e.g., Gillette 7OC Blacks and Personna Platinum Chrome blades.

Merkur...enough said.

3 attempts...never got past the first pass. Tried in different razors, just in case. Never any good results in these.

Make sure to keep those around if you ever get a more aggressive razor, like a Fatip or R41. A lot of people like that blade in those razors.

+1 Agree exactly. Even some good blades can become excellent in certain razors and terrible in others. The more experimenting with blade-razor combos the better your shave will end up in the future once you obtain the best pairing for you.

Lord Plat in the R41 is a big NO for me. So uncomfortable, haven't tried it in my Fatip yet though (and to be honest I probably won't).

I dislike Derbys. Always cut me in the EJ and give me the most painful razor burn in the Fatip. Never wanted to try them in the R41, even though it comes with a single blade free. I had a 2nd pack of Derby free with my shavette and I've given that away to a friend who thinks they are great. I hate them.

Shark SC is the nightmare blade for me... Awfull. Most everything from the Gillette plant in Russia is golden, including Astras. Even Derby blades are OK compared to recent Shark SC blades... To each their own, but the Shark SC taught me that there really is such a thing as a garbage blade. Of course, my garbage blade might be your favorite blade.... Go figure.

Bluebirds. Made in Turkey. Feels like a rabid weasel. $Weasels ripped my flesh.jpg

I had some Top Care SE's that also made it about 1/4 of one pass before I threw away the 10 pack. Mine did not say where they were made, but I really find it hard to believe that ASR/Personna could put out a blade that bad.
