What's new

Above The Tie "Windsor Pro"

The new Above The Tie "Windsor Pro Stainless" is a razor that you can add to your den and not question whether or not you overpaid for a modern DE razor. The newest ATT razor is a very sweet deal at $99.00. The regular list price is $149.00 which will still be a great price for a modern razor of this quality. The craftsmanship and finish are as nice as the original ATT Windsor.

How does the Pro shave? Like a Pro. This is a very easy razor to get a BBS with very little attention to blade angle and pressure. The shave is as smooth as your smoothest Aristocrat or Gillette Tech but much more efficient. I paired the Pro with a Gillette Platinum blade and had almost no blade feel with an exaggerated blade angle and no blade feel at a 30% blade angle. The Pro is so smooth it could be your "daily driver". My shave was early this morning and I am still without any noticeable change in closeness at 5 pm.

If you have ever owned an Above The Tie Razor you are familiar with the ATT quality and the Windsor Pro is manufactured as well as any of the other ATT razors. The Kronos handle is a perfect match with a great grip.

This baby is a winner, maybe Matt will add an open comb version soon.

Great review!

I also feel the new Windsor Pro is a great razor.
I did get some blade feel from it but nothing uncomfortable or harsh, just a tad more than my preference.

The Windsor original has nearly no blade feel and I absolutely love that razor!!

ATT makes great razors, no matter which model one chooses based on preference.

I don't have a funny description.
If I'm not mistaken, people have said that ATT moved their production to China, or perhaps just the production of the less expensive models?

Hi! This is Mariah from Above The Tie. Just for some clarification, ONLY the Windsor Pro Stainless and Windsor Pro Aluminum are manufactured in China. All of our other razors are still manufactured in the USA. We have been featuring our USA machine shop in our recent posts.
I hope this helps. Happy shaving!

Pictures, please. I love me some razor porn. Do you know what the blade gap is?

Here you go.

Thank you, Mariah, any plans for an open comb?

I received my Windsor Pro, yesterday. I was pretty pleased with the fit and finish of the razor. I think it looks better in person than it does in the pictures, and it would seem to be quite the deal at $99.

However, I did find an issue after loading a blade (a fresh Astra SP). The blade alignment was noticeably off, which I've never had an issue with on my (many) other ATT razors. Upon disassembly, the cause was apparent. On the Windsor Pro top cap, the pins are a bit too small in diameter and do not grab the blade firmly, allowing far too much wiggle. I've attached images below which show the issue on the Windsor Pro and the same blade in a Windsor (non-Pro), which grips the blade nice and firmly, as does the Classic line.

Obviously, this is a problem and should not happen on a razor in this class. To make matters worse, the usual manual remedy for such an issue (to adjust the blade alignment via the blade tabs prior to fully tightening) is not available here, since the blade tabs are covered. So, the sharp edges of the blade must be touched to align, which is not a good idea (both for safety and for the blade edge).

I've emailed this information to Above the Tie and hope to receive a response soon.

Matt responded by email (within a few hours, too, so very quickly). Good news:

Peter,
Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry that slipped by us. We just became aware of the issue and it seems to just be affecting a few caps. We are testing before these go out the door.
You are correct, the pins need to be exactly the same size as the space in the blade. The pins should be 2mm.
I will get a replacement in the mail today along with a shipping label to return the defect.
V/r,
Matt

Probably a highly stupid question....but given that that cutout pattern [on these blades ] looks pretty standard why does no one make a "pin" that was shaped exactly to that cutout? Would not that hold the blade as rigidly as possible? If per-chance there are slight brand specific variances one might imagine someone (ahem att) actually printing out caps that are specific to a blade brand for people who are a bit OCD about that sort of thing and calling it a next gen. feature... Given the general nature of the forum I'd guess there would be a market for such a thing if it really helped keep things even more rigid?

I'm only guessing when I say this, but... I'm going to say because round pins can be easily turned to exact specifications. A more complex shape, like you're suggesting, would be just that much more difficult (read: expensive) to reproduce while maintaining the tight tolerance required.
