Hey guys...

I was wondering how you guys sterilize your razors ?

some people talk about barbicide ... is it enough to avoid contracting anything from the blade ?

please share you experiences ...

thanks

On a razor that you own and are the sole user?
Not needed. Any "bug" that you are going to get from that blade, you either already have, or your immune system will handle it without you even knowing about it.

Used razors? Some get a bit paranoid about sterilizing them, but the fact is that very few pathogens will survive long enough to make the trip from seller to buyer.
Even fewer will survive more than 2 weeks.
The "nasties"... Hep-C and AIDS, require some amount of blood on the item.

In general, "dishwasher clean" is clean enough, just like the silverware at your local cafe.
Give the used item a good cleaning with scrubbing bubbles, rinse, swish in alcohol, allow the alcohol to dry, and you're done. That's more than most people do, and we don't have a rash of people catching things from used shaving gear.

If you are still worried, a dip in Barbicide, following the mixing and soak-time instructions, will absolutely kill off anything remaining.

Many vintage razors are ruined by ill-advised attempts to sterilize and "clean the finish" through excessive soaking (even scrubbing bubbles and Barbicide will damage), or use of the wrong products (vinegar will destroy the plating).

I clean up any gunk on the razor (eBay stuff) and dunk the blade (not the scales in barbicide).

I barbicide everything that comes to my house, even for routine honing. As Rich said most pathogens do not survive long outside the body or outside a gunk of blood, but why tak chances.

You do have to be careful with some very high carbon blades, some come out with spouts from the barbicide dunking. Mothers cleans it up nicely but with etching or Goldwash it is more complicated.

I use rubbing alcohol and hot water. During honing metal is removed from the cutting edge of a straight razor making it a "new" blade for lack of a better word. After honing, stropping and rinsing the cutting edge of a straight it is safe for use. BTW Barbicide is mostly alcohol.

I use 98% Everclear since it something I won't drink I use it for disinfection the razor.

It was given to me free!
