I just won an auction for a set in an ABC case and I was wondering of anyone could tell me if this set is correct? The item number is 271155164403. Any input about these sets would be appreciated also. I bought this set because the tarnish/Patena seems all the same on all items, so I assumed it was period correct. But when I started looking at information on these sets, they all seem to have very ornate handles for the razors. I appreciate any input. Thanks

i believe the razor should have the same floral pattern. im not sure tho. i dont know too much about the ABC sets

It looks from the pictures that yours is a Gillette made case with a ball-end old type razor. It should clean up nicely, though there may be a problem with the case latching.

Thanks for those threads, from what I can read in a short time I guess that Gillette took over production of the pocket sets around 1916. After that time some of the pocket sets were sold with ball end razors. The latch rivits and latch styles are how I can tell if the case was made by Gillette, also the liner on the lid. As far as the razor is concerned, the logo under the base plate, and serial number on top of the base plate will be a good indicator of the period it was made in. So judging from what I read this set I won, is probably a correct Gillette pocket set from after 1916. I hope! Any further input will be appreciated. Thans again all.

I recieved my Gillette Pocket set today. As was shown in the photos it was heavily tarnished, so I spent the afternoon cleaning and dissasembling the case and other pieces. Finally just as porter indicated in another thread the ball end old type with this set had a serial number dating it at 1918. I'm very happy about this as it means my Pocket set is correct as far as the razor goes. Unfortunately, I have to discard the old velvet/felt inside the case due to mold and deteriation. I will probably also have to fabricate a tray for the bottom too, because it rusted holes in that too. But even so, this has been a great way to learn first hand what can be involved in restoring a razor and case. It will be beautiful when I am done, and it will be a great gift for the Mrs. since it has the floral design on the case. I'll post pictures as soon as I can line up someone's computer, all I have is an iPhone and it won't post photos on the forum.
