A week of canned goo

This isn't one of those "Hey, gang, let's all use this product for a week and then post about it" posts. I don't expect company.

I need to see if the foam in a can is as awful as we make it out to be. I'll try to be honest.

Tonight it was MK for Men. It's Mary Kay shaving foam. It listed aloe as an ingredient, so I was hopeful. First canned goo in almost a year. I was a little scared.

Washed up, foamed up, let it sit for two minutes. Odd menthol-type tingling. Got to work with an ABC Pocket and a Shark. Three passes.

WTG went OK. I was kind of expecting my face to burst into flames or for the blade to jump out of the razor and start digging in to my skin like a leech, but it went OK.

XTG not so nice. I noticed that I missed the soapy slip I get from my soaps and creams. No disasters, but here is a difference even my uneducated shaving palate can detect.

ATG not so good. Again, no slip. I really watch my angles and emerge unscathed, even when the razor skips once or twice. I cheat and go kind of XTG above the upper lip.

After I'm done, the Aqua Velva burns some more than I'm used to...but I end up with a DFS. Certainly presentable, and making lather the Cheez-Whiz way is quick. No brush to rinse, squeeze and shake. It's just done.

I feel like I just ate a baked potato with no butter or sour cream. But I did eat, didn't I?

Thanks for biting that bullet for us. I've been using soap for two months and I was curious but didn't want to back to that itchy, irritated neck even once just to validate the switch. Consider yourself a human guinea pig. :001_tongu

I tried to start DE shaving with a can of Barbasol and intended on using it up before switching to a different shaving cream. Well, my experience was pretty horrible with the Barbasol. As you stated, it doesn't give that same silky smooth texture as some of the other products do and as a noob, I paid dearly for it. Maybe I'll go back to it once I find a solid technique, but until then, I'm going to stay away from it.

I can get by on the Edge/Gillette sensitive skin gels, but even then my face is irritated.

Canned goo isn't total crap, its not the optimal way to go, has cushion with no slip imo.

The last time I used canned goo - a decade or more ago - I got severe rash and burning before the blade was ever used. My quest for something better was a one way trip; I don't need to be reminded about what I'm missing.

Whoa I have never had problems pre-shave with the product just sitting on my face

What can of garbage were you using?

I forgot my shaving soap once while travelling. To make do I used edge gel. Just shot some into the brush and face lathered. It wasn't great but it worked.

There is just so many different choices you get in soaps and you can really personalize your shave with them. I don't think canned cream can ever compare because of this.

When i'm in a hurry i take my can of Proraso and it gives good results, no big difference from a soap.

I often wondered if the "canned-goo" from the makers of the quality soaps and creams, like Proraso, LaToja, Speick and Tabac, were a step up from the Foamy/Edge canned products. But with the huge variety of known high quality soaps and creams at my disposal, I can't force myself to buy them.

Thanks for taking one for the team Topgumby:001_smile

You gotta try it before you toss it
Seriously I have so much wet shaving software around here I shouldn't be thinking of buying canned goo just to follow this thread. You're on your own.

I did a similar thing a couple of weeks ago, only with my multiblade razor instead of canned goo. I had a bunch of cartridges left over and I couldn't bring myself to throw them away. I used soap/cream with a brush every day, then gassed up the Fusion. Honestly, the shaves were fine. It was fast and it got the job done. The only negative thing I could add is that I was pretty bristly by the end of the day. Now the cartridges are gone and I'm happily back to my DEs.

The only time I ever use canned soap is when I travel. It's easier that way, but shaves are never as comfortable. Still OK, but not particularly enjoyable.

There is nothing like a warm brushed lather for shaving, not to mention the pleasant process of making it yourself.

my main reason for not using goo, ever, is the smell, the foam just has a horrible gas like undertone (because of the gas in it i guess :) and the gel always smells like a toilet air freshener to me, having said that ive never tried anything higher end than the gillette stuff, but i just dont care to now ive tried soaps and creams, im sure though that a good goo used with a brush could easily give soap challenging shaves.

Tonight it's going to be Edge Gel or Old Spice foam. Very stubbly today after work, last night's shave didn't take like it does with a good soap or cream.

This might be a looooong week.

It could turn in to a short one.
