What's new

a tip of the hat to Gillette slim

I picked up a birth quarter slim over a hear ago and used it a few times but found my futur and progress worked much better for me. Last week I pulled out the slim and dropped a Gillette Yellow in, set it at 7 and when to town. I got the smoothed shave I think I've ever had!

So a bit of advice to the new guys, if you acquire a razor that you don't really like, hang on to it! in a few months, or a year you might take it out and find it's the best razor you've ever used.

That is great advice, jtb. I have had the same experience with more than one razor. As your shaving process matures, you will be able to shave well with razors that didn't work when you were not as experienced.

As for the Slim . . . one heck of a fine shaver!!

I have a replated 1965 Slim - and it shaves wonderfully for sure. When I do my "adjustable" rotation - it works alongside my Futur and Megress LH; all wonderful shavers.

Good advice indeed. When I first got my EJ89, I liked it OK, and though about selling it. I tried again a month or two later, and now it is one of my 3x razors in rotation!

I started with a Slim when I first started shaving in the mid-1960s and I still have one. I like it better than the Fat Boy, but the Super Adjustable is my favorite of the three. All are great razors indeed.

Using mine this week!

With a Super Stainless blade and some William's Luxioury Soap.

Follow up will be Yardley's after shave.

shaved for the first time last week with the slim, have heard a few on here say they prefer it to the fat boy,i think i prefer it to the fat boy myself, is the black handle adjustible similar to the slim, one of those might be on the list next.

Yardley's was what my Dad used. I thought it had a fresh, clean smell. I used that and Aqua Velva, but can't find Yardley's any more. Where can you get it today?

So true, the same thing has happened to me. There's no telling what my number one razor will be a year from now. I might already own it.

Yardley's shave soap is no longer made. The company went belly-up in the early 90's IIRC and the name/soap recipes were sold several times. Now for the first time in almost 20 years the bath soap is available ($1 for a large bar at Dollar General, no I haven't tried to lather it for shaving) but the shave soap is not being made to my knowledge. There is a thread with more information on Yardley's bankruptcy and history on here somewhere but I don't have a link.

I have a beautiful Slim-mint condition all the way around. I haven't used it in a while-maybe I should stop letting it sit around looking pretty all day and put it to work. Thanks for the idea.
