A Tech Question

Just acquired a Tech from Rockytop which is a seventy's model with a zinc head from what I understand from Cooncatbob. With the head disassembled, it appears that the only thing/things that hold the blade in the correct position are the small tabs at each end of the underside of the head piece. From looking at pictures on ebay and b/s/t, it appears that some earlier than mine have a metal spine running horizontally across the bottom of the head that look to correspond to the opening running horizontally through a blade. Would like to understand why the design change and, more importantly, if the tabs alone are enough to stabilize the blade. I am sure the tabs are enough or else Gillette would have fostered a problem child. But still would like to know. Particularly since I hope to inaugurate this Tech in the morning!! Thanks, John

Sure enough. I've heard of no problem with this setup. The advisable assembly sequence is to lay the cap down first, then fit the blade down over the stud. At that point it should become obvious how the corner features will locate the blade. Next slip the base plate onto the other two parts and thread the handle on and carefully tighten it down.

If you want, do a careful visual check to make sure that the blade edges look to be parallel to the safety bars.

Thank you!!! Just loaded the Tech ten minutes ago in anticipation of tomorrow, and did it just exactly like you said it should be done!! First time with a three-piece, and the only thing I am uncomfortable with so far is that the blade sticks out of each side (not the sharp part of the blade) to the point of being a bit unnerving. Hope I get use to it! Thanks, John

The changes were done to save money and the tech was on it's last legs.
The corner nubs are more then adequate to keep the blade properly aligned

I have no problems with the blade staying put on the Techs that I have with that design. I hold the head by the ends when changing the blade. That's how Dad taught me to do it.

Had 2nd shave with exactly this head today and had no issues with it. It's adequate to hold a blade in. There really is not torque on the blade so the nubs will be fine.

Are those tech heads really zinc?

I've been using one of these late model techs for awhile and it's a really nice razor. No worries about the corner tabs keeping the blade straight.

I wouldn't be surprised. It makes for a nice cheap die cast part.
