A Starter Humidor

So I don't smoke cigars that much. I usually will have one maybe twice or three times a month, usually in good company with friends or parishioners.

I'm considering getting a good starter humidor. I don't need a chest of cigars. But something simple to store maybe 20 to 35 cigars at a time.

Suggestions?

If you don't care about aging/seasoning them, just use a tupperdor(basically a tupperware container with the humidity controls added for optimum storage). If you google tupperdor, you'll find more info than you'll know what to do with.

This works as well as anything, in my experience.

But if you are looking for something a bit nicer, a decent humi can be had without spending a lot of money. Overstock.com has them and I would check Amazon, Ebay and a site called cheaphumidors.com. I'd advise you to get something a bit bigger than what you think you need--maybe a 50 stick humi. IMO you should season the box before using it. There are several methods, but here is one that works:

The only thing I do differently than the article above, is I have given up on the humidistats that come with the humidors. Instead, I opt for using a small jar of humidification beads (such as Xikar) and/or Boveda or Xikar humidifier pouches. I have found them to be easier, more effective and more reliable than the standard humidistat.

Thanks, friends!

Looks like I got myself a new project. I picked up some materials at Wal-Mart and ordered some stuff from cheaphumidors.com to humidify it.

Once that's done, just got to fill it with some good stogies! I've been really digging some of the Rocky Patel Cameroons. Those are GREAT with a cup of black coffee! :tongue_sm

Fantastic! Do us a favor and take a pic of it when you have it completed. Enjoy your smokes.

If I do get a cedar humidor, do I need Heartfelt beads to equilize the humidity? I'm sort of concerned here since I live in an area that doesn't really have a lot of moisture, so hopefully it won't be that difficult.

I like the humidifier packs (I use a propylene glycol solution to moisten them) and the small Xikar jar of humidity crystals. This has been working very well for my humidor which has about 50 sticks or so in it. The packs can be purchased at different humidity levels.

Some prefer the heartfelt beads and other use crystal cat litter. I haven't tried either of those. I just got sick of using the humidifying systems built into these cheap humidors.

You can buy a 20 count humidor for around $25. That should keep your cigars in a good condition. The seal is important on a humidor, some like to do the dollar trick. Put a dollar bill in the humidor so half is in and half is out. Close the humidor and if you can easily pull the dollar out, its a weak seal.
