What's new

a simple experience

For me at least.

After having worked through a myriad of blades, some razors (EJ and Merkur plus Gilette birth year and some others), and soap, and creams, and techniques.... by far the best and most consistent shave has been centered around using a $2.50 goat's milk bar of soap, and whatever else. I have spent at times upwards of 30 minutes of prep, lathering, shaving, post shaving... loving the entire experience each time. Have turned this into a tea ceremony of sorts, or meditation, or the many things we can compare it to. I am SO happy to have returned to this shaving experience after years of quite mediocre and sub par shaving.

But I found myself shaving this eve and going for the simple version. It was an EJ with I think a Derby but might have been anything because I get consistent results no matter what with.... a plain and simple goat's milk bar of soap. I have created all kinds of exotic preshaving lotions which are excellent. Am very in to using iodine in these shaving oils and can wax on for a long time about the different combinations of essential oils, iodine, and base carrier oils. I have gone through a slew of shaving cream and pucks. And blades. But by far the best, most consistent and closest shave is with this plain jane goat's milk bar and whatever is in my razor. I do not heat up distilled water, prep a brush, and go through all the pre-intercourse prep. This eve it was faucet, switching hot and cold water, soaped up from the bar of goat's milk soap and 3 minutes and two passes later, exquisite.

Am making mountain out of mole hills to remind myself, and anyone else who might read this far, that things can be pretty simple too. Beginning to end, including clean up... 3 minutes. And I have as close a shave as I ever get. Including from say an aggressive Merkur, Maca cream, surgical Personnas, and 30 minutes of prep and cleanup. I am especially happy because I have some areas that are challenging to gain a close shave, and I am most consistent on these harder to accomplish areas when I do this goat's milk bar of soap from Sprout's.

That's all. Simple. Simple. Simple. For me that is.

I will say it helps to have a healthy layer of skin too. I find that good nutrition and backing that with some simple supplements that include MSM can go a long way towards maintaining a healthy epidermis. And I am a huge proponent of the use of iodine, Lugols iodine, in if not a preshave, at least a post shave lotion. Few have ever asked about this when I bring it up. But I will say with much energy that using specific forms of iodine topically post shave can have an excellent effect on the skin. Highly recommended. Always fun to walk into venues with my brothers who is many years younger and have people speculate that he is the older brother. Iodine and jojoba for instance, coupled with some essential oils like helichrysum, neroli, frankincense, and myrrh... can do wonders.

As always, coming to Badger and Blade is one of the best internet experiences too. Few communities are worthy. B&B would be one of them....

What a great commentary on wet shaving. I feel the very same way about the "ritual" of preparation and post shaving that you have so eloquently shared with us in your post.

Spot on and good show! :badger:
