It's impressive when someone embraces their own mortality. One of the best experiences I had while working on the obit desk was a gentleman who came in to write his own. He had no family, but felt proud of some of his accomplishments in post WWII Japan and stateside. I learned a lot about history from a different angle.
Am thinking of writing out obituaries in advance. Have seen newspapers and funeral homes mess up family obituaries to the point I no longer trust them for the job. These were things like leaving out a survivor, or getting surnames wrong. Other than that, they'll be plain, run-of-the-mill obituaries.
Thanks for sharing that. Did you know her or just find this online? She sounded like she would have been a riot to know. I'm not sure when a god time is to write one, but I may pen one f my own and do my bed to make it borderline scandalous!
Pretty cool. I like the I'm going to swim to the buoy and back part. Reminds me of my aunt, she used to take us swimming at the lake house my grandparents had. We swam all the way across the lake with her.
The whole obit kinda reminds me of her personality actually.
Thanks for sharing it.
First appeared in my local. She had suffered from dementia for quite a few years so the obit was written by a daughter with the blessing of her father. Written to capture spirit of her mom.
