What's new

A question please!

I have re-posted this hopefully in the right section this time. Any information would be helpful.
I have a Simmons Howe Co. razor it has the number 3 on the blade and also U.S.A. and has an ivory handle it was my uncles razor and he left it with me when he died. I was talking to my dad who is 89 years old and he said it was their dads razor. I know nothing about straight razors and was wondering if someone could tell me if it is that old enough to have been my grandfathers because he died 24 years before I was born, and if it would clean up good enough for shaving because it would give me incentive enough to try to use it. Although I pause when I think about putting it up to my neck. With my being a reenactor I from the mid 18 century period there would be no more hiding in my tent to shave. I tried looking it up on the review page but did not find anything on S&H.

Nice razor! I'm sure there is a good chance that it was indeed your grandfather's razor. In the condition it is in, I would say that your uncle took very good care of it.:thumbup1:

I don't quite think it's as old as an 18th century razor, but there is a good chance of it being a 19th century, though I'm more inclined to think it would be mid to late 19th century if not early 20th.

But having said that, it's still a fine catch, and if you wish to give it a bit of resto work, it'd come out NICE. Hope you get it restored, Heirloom razors are something special

Nice razor, you will need to have it honed probably and find a strop! It looks like a great shaver! Razors that were in the family don't have a price IMO!

I bought a razor in pretty much the same condition last year that i fixed up, and it's an amazing shaver. In my oppinion, the razors from those eras are the best.

I know this has been asked a hundred time before, how often must a razor be honed?

Depends on how you maintain it and use it.

I read the average rule is 20 shaves. I had more than 20 shaves with a few of my razors and still didn't need to be honed.
