What's new

A new simpsons brush. Which will it be?

I would like another Simpsons brush geared specifically toward bowl lathering creams (for sure) and possibly soft soaps as well.

I'm leaning toward the Polo 8 in Super 2 Band Badger, but the Duke 2 and 3 look nice as well, not to mention the Emperor 3 in Super 2 Band.

I welcome any and all suggestions, including brushes of a different make.

The EJ white porcelain bowl with silver rim looks fantastic. Does anyone know if it would be suitable for bowl lathering creams and soft soaps?

Unless the bowl is very shallow, I'd say polo or emperor would be a much better choice than duke (I consider duke a face-lathering brush). And I will say that 2 band badger is definitely my choice if I'm bowl lathering with a badger brush. That said, honestly, bowl lathering I'd probably chose a boar over a badger, being able to really mash that sucker in there and not worry since it's a $20 brush instead of a $150 brush pays off with bowl lathering, and also a lot of what I like about badger brushes is more face-lathering related. If you want a badger though, definitely a long handle 2-band is the right call. Short loft and dense as always are positives in my book as well (so if you're getting from TSS, I'd get the shortest loft he has in stock).

I would take a look at a Rooney Victorian. The handle is perfect for bowl lathering. Also, a Simpson Keyhole 4...very soft with a high loft. As for bowls, I prefer rice bowls. They are the perfect size and some have ridges on the bottom.

Of those you listed I'd go for the Polo 8. It seems it has been expressly designed for bowl/scuttle lathering and will perform greatly with any kind of cream or soap.

+1

and with Super 2 Band Badger - you really can't go wrong.

I'm not a fan of the narrow base on the Emperor - Polo8 just seems to have it together.

Another Polo vote from me.

If you want to "branch out" from Simpsons, take a serious look at a Kent BK8. It still is my #1 bowl lathering brush, followed closely by my Da Vinci 290

As far as bowl lathering creams and soft soaps, is there another Simpsons that you would recommend over or on a par with the Polo 8 Super?

Depending on how much backbone you'd like, I highly suggest a 3 band Emporer 3. Absolutely amazing bowl brush and soft, while having more than enough back bone to apply the cream as needed.

The Edwin Jagger Porcelain Lather bowl is awesome.... I purchased mine from John at West Coast Shaving. I always wanted one since I saw Robert Johnston from "The Gentlemen's Shop" use in his youtube video. It is a very classy piece. I use a Duke 3 in it and love it. My second choice would be an Emperor 3....

Polo 8 2-band Super or even better Polo 10 2-band Super for the win for best bowl brush ever made :thumbup1:

I don't bowl/scuttle lather anymore, but I still like tot hink I know a great bowl lather brush when I see it :badger::badger:

No sooner had I finally decided on the Polo 8 in Super 2 Band Badger when I found myself admiring the special edition Manchurians on the Simpsons site.

My objective remains the same: I would like another Simpsons brush geared specifically toward bowl lathering creams (for sure) and possibly soft soaps as well.

Please help me decide from among the following:

-Polo 8 in Manchurian
-Emperor 3 in Manchurian
-Polo 8 in Super 2 Band

:badger:

Given my objective, are the Manchurians worth the added expense? Please weigh in.

Which will it be? Please help me decide.

Timothy, how would you like your brush to be?

I am mainly concerned about its bowl lathering capabilities with the use of creams and soft soaps. The main focus would be on the use of creams.

I am just wondering if the Manchurian badger is worth the extra expense or not in terms of performance.

I will add my recommendation for the Emperor 2 band.

Understand that I prefer two band brushes, though.

YMMV. Enjoy the selection process!
