What's new

A journal of a Cajun's life wet shaving

WOW! Not many people wear watches these days, since the time can be quickly seen on a cell phone. When it comes to watches, I am very ignorant on the quality stuff, because I was poor growing up, and could only afford commoner digital 20 dollar watches. Of course, I've watched a lot of action movies, so I know about how people swear by Swiss watches. But yeah, everybody has their thing, and I think you probably have a huge collection of watches. Congrats, I hope that you enjoy your new watch for years. And I see it was set for the correct date, upon opening the box. If you had bought a watch from China, it wouldn't have been set correctly, I can tell you that much lol.
I feel "naked" unless I have my wrist watch on. I do agree that less and less people wear wrist watches everyday though.

I have a number of watches I rotate through, the most expensive being my 2 Maurice Lacroix and my Girard Peregaux which I got when my father passed. It's very plain and cost me more than it was worth to have fixed...but I like it. I also have e few others but the one I tend to wear the most is my Apple Watch which tells me weather, messages etc...it's very useful.

I actually only have 4, this one, A Nordgreen, A Citizen, and a Seiko my parents gave me for graduation. I will not spend major money on any watch. The Swiss ones are over $1000 for the most part. 5 digits for a watch is just ludicrous in my book, ain't gonna happen. Do you know how many soaps and razors I can have for that amount? I'd give a new meaning to treewalling. Haha. Anywho, I am a cheap collector, I'll be happy with what have, Orient is great value in a watch. They are owned by Seiko and tend to be more of a value. This one is mechanical, has no battery, and is powered by movement. Under $200 on Jomashop. Anyway, my dad grew up in the 1930s and was much influenced by the great depression. We felt poor growing up because my dad did not spoil us. He did save a chunk of change for mom after he passed. Wisdom of my father. There are many razors costing more than this watch. The Nordgreen I got over 50% off, around $100. I'm pleased with the collection so far and I'm unsubscribing from the emails so I won't be tempted any longer. I may get a field watch. Save up for one. But never 5 figures for a watch, that is just sinful to me. Even if I hit the lotto.

I changed from an Apple watch, I got tired of the notifications and all that. I used to keep my phone clipped to my belt at all times and walk around with a bunch of keys hanging off my belt, even at church. As I have grown older I realize it isn't all that and a bag of chips to be in constant contact with the world. I just want to unplug at times. Take it easy. Maybe it comes with getting older. I look in the reflection of myself, all geared up head to toe with a jacket, helmet, over pants, etc., in the door at work when I open up shop and think, I look like an old BMW rider. Then think, wait a minute, I am an old BMW rider. Haha. Its all good.

that's the same watch i received for my graduation!!!!! I got the green one
It's a great watch, a fantastic value. It feels and looks like a watch costing way more.

I hear ya. I have an Apple phone so it works nicely in conjunction with the watch. I also have the watch set so I have to tap it to see the time etc so it generally stays silent and unlit.

Notes:

Rushed shaved today, I got up late and skipped the row on the Concept2, I have not felt motivated to exercise this week. I need to fix that next week. I read @thombrogan's journal on shallow angle shaving and gave that a try. I still need to figure out my pressure. I did feel the razor shaving even at a shallow angle.

Being rushed for time I loaded the brush straight from the tub. It was a tad different getting to the correct lather consistency, but nonetheless, I achieved the same result, a fine slick creamy lather.

I did a 2.5 pass shave, one N-S, one true ATG, and touchups. I did try and keep conscious of a shallow angle and applied some pressure. I was shaving along, getting great results. I shaved the jawline-cheek transition with a shallow angle and was impressed, it was BBS. Next the neck, I used the same shallow angle and again got a great shave. Then I noticed them, weepers one on the neck and one on the face. The Self popped his head in the bathroom.

"Go ahead, let me have it." I awaited the inevitable poem.

Roses are red
and so is your face
what started out good
ended in a disgrace

Maybe the next time
adjust your pressure
so you won't have such
a bleeding gusher.

"Enough, I don't have the time." I interrupted Self. Self walked back into the living room, I heard him count off the 12 steps to the fridge, no doubt another Jell-O shot met its demise.

The weepers were short lived for the most part, the one on the neck required the styptic pencil and a second brush with the alum block. I just checked the mirror at work and I see nothing on the neck. All is healed.

I'm headed to Alabama this weekend to drop off my bride to visit the daughters and grandchildren. I may not get a shave in this weekend, we'll see how it works out. I will have my LSU shirts to wear at church down there on Sunday. I gotta be me. The funny thing is that it is likely I'll not be the only one in LSU colors. Haha.

"You're going out of town this weekend?" Self yelled from the living room.

"Yes, to Alabama. What are you doing?"

"I have a hot da.....errr nothing, nothing at all."

"A date? Don't tell me. You're not going to..."

Self butts in, "Don't worry about me, I have this handled, a few Jell-O Shots and she'll be butter."

"You'll be in a straight jacket, that's how it will end up."

Vloid scent is a play on Floid, to me smells like what a 1960 businessman would smell. My wife gave it the thumbs. It is of medium strength. Still hanging around but fading.

I wish everyone a blessed weekend, may all your shaves be BBS, nick, and weeper free.

Yep, I use my watch to pay for gas on the motorcycle, very convenient. I needed fuel yesterday on the way home, good thing I keep a credit card in one of the pockets of my jacket. I'm an AGATT rider, all the gear all the time, so I have over pants on every day which makes getting to the wallet tough. That's when the Apple watch shined. I do find myself swiping down on the new watch as though it's a smartwatch. Haha.

I love your shave reports. But can I just say, I really appreciate self. I notice a lot of people here are worried about self, but as long as he's not downing entire big bottles of high proof alcohol, I think he will be fine. What is most important to me, is that self is there in your life. No matter what happens in life, you have each other's backs. Sure you both do a little nit picking on each other once in awhile, but what brother doesn't do that? And think of it this way too, Self considers you important enough in his life, that he spends the time to come up with poetry.

I remember when I was a kid, I had people in my life who I thought were my friends. After they met what kind of parents I had, they went off looking for more popular, what seemed like to them, better friends. So I guess what I am getting at is, Self considers you important enough to stick around. He doesn't care about people outside the home. He likes to spend time with his Cajun brother, watching sports on TV, letting out the occasional burps, and slurping down delicious jello shots.

And not only do you have your silly poetry creating, and jello shot slurping Cajun bro, you also have your amazing Bride, who know doubt, makes each day an amazing and magical one. If you asked me, I'd call that life is good. And then when you had traditional wet shaving on top of all that, whats a couple weepers? I mean, thats what alum block is for! HAHA. I say, be grateful for what you have, and just try your best to enjoy life.

And yes, if you sensed that I am speaking from the heart right now, you sensed correctly, because I know first hand experience, on what its like to go through life, not having some of those things. Rock on Cajun friend, and his silly Cajun bro Self. Now hand me one of those jello shots. SLURP......POP! Now thats one tasty jello shot, nearly blue out my taste buds on that one, its gooood! Yessir!

Thank you, my brother. I consider all here bothers in wet shaving. Yes, I know I am truly blessed, I tell God that every night in my prayers. And I struck paydirt finding my wife at my stage in life. I am truly grateful. With age comes wisdom and appreciation. And Self can't go anywhere, he's stuck with me. No rhyme or reason for him to leave. Now if he will just leave Big Nurse alone he might just come out okay. Haha.

Back from my 5 hour drive weekend trip and had to share this with you!

Hope you had a fun weekend also!
I did, my trip was 8 hours each way. We left Saturday morning and I was back Sunday by 4 pm-ish. I had a few Geaux Tigers when we attended church in Spanish Fort Alabama. I wasn't the only one with an LSU shirt on in church either, at least two others that I could see. Thanks for asking, now to catch up on Self shenanigans.

Notes:

Good Monday morning. No shaves over the weekend. I dropped my bride off at our daughter's house in Alabama, she will see some baseball games our grandson is playing. I was on a good streak of daily shaving, pushing a month. With three days of growth on my beard, I decided to go with a known razor the Rex Envoy paired with the Astra SP. And the combo did a fine job.

Self wasn't here when I returned home from Alabama, I hope he kept out of trouble.

I loaded the shaving bowl with the bass guitar pic as I am finishing up a sample of the 1966, otherwise, I would have loaded the brush directly from the bowl. Lathering was, as usual, I performed a 2.5-pass shave again. One N-S, one true ATG, and touchups. I did see a video on YouTube by GeoFatboy where he demonstrated the technique I am learning with a shallow angle. It is a new one in which he tested the new replacement for the Personna Med Prep blade to see if it is identical to the old one. His conclusion was it is the same blade, just different branding. On my touchups, I used the shallow angle technique and it worked fine. I have less irritation today than the first time I used the technique. All is good in the land. No nicks or weepers. While I was finishing up I heard the door slam and someone running to the back of the house. It's Self. Looking all flustered, in a straight jacket.

"What the heck happened to you?" I asked Self, knowing full well who put him in the straight jacket.

"I had a bad weekend, a bad weekend." Self said while trying to catch his breath.

"I told you to leave her alone, you just don't listen."

"I know, I know, it started out great then went south in a heartbeat."

"What happened?"

"Let me start from the beginning." Self said as he tried to get out of the straight jacket, motioning me to loosen the buckles.

"So it started off really good, we went to the LSU/Arkansaw game first, and she loved it. The crowd, the excitement all was over the top. Then we get back to the place and I fix her some Shrimp Creole with my secret spice recipe."

"You mean you used Tony Chachere's?" I asked Self.

"Shhhhhh man, you'll let my secret out."

"Ohhh kay Self."

"So all is going well, some Jell-O shots, and she's loosening right on up. We retire to the bedroom."

"So far so good, how did you get into the straight jacket?" I asked

"I'll get to that, just wait. So we start to disrobe. I take my shoes and socks off, you know I had that surgery on my big toe and it has a big scar on it. She asked 'What was that from?' Being the jokester I am, it said I had Toe'lio, She asked 'Polio?' I said no, Toe'lio. She chuckled and we went on. Then I took the pants off, I have that scar on my knee from wrecking the Motocross bike back in the day, she asked what that was from, and I told her I had Knee'monia. She laughed and said 'Don't you mean pneumonia?' I said no, knee'monia"

"You think you're slick don't you," I asked, Self half-way nodded.

"So in my mind, it's all going great, she's laughing at my jokes, and she loved the food and the game. Then the big reveal comes. I pull off my undies. Her eyes get big, her mouth drops open in amazement, and then she points at Willie and yells:

Don't tell me, don't tell me, you had small cocks???"
I try not to laugh at Self, but it is to no avail. "Bhahahahahahahahahahahaha" I break out laughing, I'm on the floor laughing my butt off. I can hardly breathe.

"Stop laughing dude." Self yelled. "That's exactly what she did, laughing her arse off. It was cold in there man. The AC must have been on 60, Willie had some shrinkage. After that, I felt so embarrassed that I just finished off all the Jell-O shots to the sounds of her laughing her hind end off."

"Where did the straight jacket come from?" I asked

"I don't know, I fell asleep on the couch and woke up with it on. All I remember is waking up and not being able to move, She was still asleep in the bed. I got out of there as fast as I could. And now I'm here."

"I told you to leave Big Nurse alone. I hope you have learned a valuable lesson."

"Yes next time, I'm going to turn the AC off." With that Self returned to the living room. "And no more Big Nurse." I heard him yell from the other room.

After that story, I regained my composure and finished the shave. It was a fine shave, a tad closer than previous days, with no nicks, weepers, or irritations. My technique is evolving as the shaves pile up. It is a great journey to be on. The aftershave splash is a nice one, not much staying power. I shall reserve the jabs at Self regarding staying power for later. He has been through enough.

I wish everyone a blessed Monday, may all your shaves be BBS, nick, and weeper free.

An excellent start to a Tuesday morning. Poor Tuesday gets no love or hate. It's just there hanging around no one paying attention to it. Sorta like Vandy or Rice Football. Haha. But I digress.

An excellent shave, I semi-channeled Boris ( @blethenstrom ) in his quest to 3017 a tuck of blades today, with a twist. I have a round magnet with two-sided tape stuck to my mirror. That's where I store my blades between shaves. I got the idea from GeoFatboy and his website Shave Nation. I didn't want to order just the magnet and found a pack of 25 at Amazon for not much more than Shave Nation charged for 1. Not that I need 25, but I have them. I don't need 15 soaps, but that doesn't stop me from looking for more. Haha. Anyway, I have 4 up there now and need to clear one out so I can try another blade and I don't want to have multiple magnets up there holding 4 blades each. The Tatra is the odd man out. I will put 5 shaves on a blade vs Boris' 7 shaves for no other reason than to get through more blades. I don't like wasting anything and tend to want to use things up. But this doesn't stop me from getting more, thus my dilemma.

This is the first time in a while that I've used a shaving cream. Now that I've lined out my lathering I am expanding my selection. I have some TOBS Lavender somewhere that is almost empty. I need to 3017 that so I can replace it. The Proraso lathered up quite nicely, a tad different than the soaps, but in the end a nice creamy thick lather.

I did the customary passes and touch-ups. I am getting the hang of riding the cap as I practice that more on the ATG strokes. I obtained BBS on the cheeks and closer on the neck than usual with no irritation. I called it quits before I got BBS on the neck to avoid irritation. The razor blade combo worked fine. I had zero feedback again from this blade. I thought it wasn't cutting at all yet it was. This is odd as these are the blades that came with the razor. I may just go ahead and 3017 this tuck to get it out of the way. A la Boris style.

Self is quite down today after the fiasco he experienced over the weekend. He is not feeling up to much shenanigans. Therefore I shall compose a poem for Self.

Ode to Self.

I know you're feeling down
It may seem to be a curse.
But everyone was telling you
not to mess with Big Nurse.

You thought with your cajun charm
You'd be all suave and de'bonner
Yet you ended up on the couch
feeling down and like a loner.

Yet all is not lost
despite this disastrous fling
Be very thankful that you
didn't put on her finger a ring.

Now lift up your head
feeling down and whatnot
Take those 12 steps of yours
and grab a Jell-O Shot

While Self consoles his feelings with some Jell-O Shots, we shall conclude the report. The scent of the Proasco is virtually non-existent. It is another fine option for use on the weekends when I am scheduled to serve at Mass. I whipped out the Ole Clubman Pinaud again. The scent fades by noon. I was watching videos of some classic scents. A few included Pinaud, some said was great, others not so much. They did mention a powdery scent to it, which before I had never really noticed. Now I do notice it. I want to try some others, revisit Brut, English Leather, and maybe Old Spice. I am going to acquire some Bay Rum aftershave of some sort. PAA released their Atomic Pumpkin Bay Rum and I'll snag some on the first. And maybe some others. Chime in with your favorite Drug Store Scents.

I wish everyone a blessed Tuesday, may all your shaves be BBS, nick, and weeper free.

Now lift up your head
felling down and whatnot

Sounds pretty good regarding your blade reduction program. I have become/becoming a simpler and simpler man as time goes. I only have one blade out at the time. It gets used for 7 days then binned and on to the next one in the tuck.

Maybe Self will do some self-reflection and re-evaluate life and what he wants in life. Seems like he is living kind of a wild life and maybe he just needs to slow down a bit and smell the roses. I have a question: is Self going through mid-life crisis? What is he trying to prove?
