A good starter cream?

I have been looking to experiment with creams, I bought a tube of Real Shaving company cream but I have heard that it is difficult to get right.

Is there a good starter cream to try?

Not sure where you heard that, but it's a fine cream. For the price, it's quite nice.

Actually, I read that in alot of the reviews of the product. I tell you what though. I could get used to this whole cream thing.

I did what most of the reviews state to do, I drained my brush, put about a nickle sized amount in a left over VDH bowl I had (for travel), and started swirling. I did this for about 30 secs and decided I needed to add a bit of water. Kept swirling until I got that creamy consistency we all love so much. Went and put in on my face and BAM:c9: I knew why people loved creams so much. I had enough to do three passes and still more left over on the brush and in the bowl. I squeezed out the rest of that super awesome cream and put in the bowl for next time. I now have zero bowls for travel, one bowl for soaps, and one bowl for creams.

I am all giddy with my super awesome shave.

Erasmic, Proraso, Arko Moist, Musgo Real. The Real Shaving Co is also a great cream. I've never had any problems lathering it.

you can get the C.E. Bigelow version at Bath and Body Works....it's simply rebranded Proraso green. Would be my recommendation to anyone as a cream who hasn't yet tried it (doesn't matter if it's a "starter" cream or not - it is inexpensive and just plain works) - the only reason you wouldn't want it, is if you have anything against menthol.

Any of the 3Ts would be a great starter. I think TOBS might be a little less expensive than the other two, but you won't be disappointed in any of them. My personal favorites, not necessarily in order

TOBS Rose
TOBS Shave Shop
Santa Maria Novella (expensive)
Geo. F Trumper violet
T&H 1805
T&H Trafalgar.

OldSaw

The wife's investment
Palmolive, oh wait, I think that was discontinued.

While Proraso is easy to pick up locally, I have never gotten a really good shave with it. I know many like it, but for those of us who don't, it just isn't a very good cream.

Arko is a nice cheap cream that works pretty well.

I also think TOBS makes about the most well balanced solution to the whole price vs quality equation. I have TOBS avocado and lavender. I like them both, but the avocado has a scent that some guys don't like.

I suspect that if this thread is active long enough, you will get a reply with just about every cream made.

That said, Arko is a steal and you can do a practice lather without feeling bad about using an expensive cream. TOBS has great scents, and is easy to lather. Kiss my Face is also a great cream, lathers like mad (use more water than you would with other creams), and is dirt cheap for how long a bottle will last you.

A big part of the fun is trying new products.
