What's new

A frugal 2014

I started wet shaving in September and started purchasing products left and right, eager to try as many as I could get my hands on. I've done my first den reduction after finding preferences for blades, brushes, soaps/creams, etc. and have limited myself to purchases only when product has run out for all of 2014. My 2014 setup includes:

Brush: Savile Row 3824
Razor: merkur 34c
Blade: Astra sp (I have around 100)
Soap: tabac
Cream: CF cedar and sandal, travel sizes of all 3 nancy boys
Pre: shea moisture shave butter
post: nancy boy blossom wood

i'm planning to only make a purchase or two all year. Probably to replace the nancy boy A/S. It's probably my favorite product I've tried so far. I'm also planning to deplete my nancy boy shaving creams first since their own website claims they are only meant to last 6 months.

All i I heard when I started researching wet shaving was how it was cheaper in the long run, time to give it a try.

Cheers,

I suppose that if one wanted to save money by wet shaving, he could, but what fun is that? This is a wondeful hobby because there are so many things out there to try and I doubt if anyone would be able to try them all in any reasonable length of time (maybe not even in a lifetime). A person could surely spend more money on much more harmful vices such as booze, gambling, cigarettes, etc. So, just spend on what you want to try next and have fun doing it. Don't feel guilty.

What is this saving money you speak of? Since I started DE shaving I've had to get a 2nd job, stop putting money in my 401K and I even sent my daughter out to get a job. But I really enjoy all my shaving stuff.....

Good for you for finding what works for you. Not so good for your credit card bill. Soon your gonna run out of counter space!!!

Good luck with that! It should be possible for you to stick with your plan.

I know what you're talking about. I started in February and totalled my expenditures in July... I haven't bought anything for the last 3 months. I actually stopped going to Starbucks in July also, so I'm actually saving more money on coffee than I used to spend on shaving. So maybe I should be able to buy a little more stuff now...

Good Luck to you Sir. Since Feb I have collected, Den Cleared, Streamlined, Bought, Sold and borrowed and even mentioned the 2014 Sabbat......I can't even say it yet.

Well done !

+1 on having too much fun shaving, maybe when I've been at this for awhile I'll narrow things down. I was thinking 4 soaps (MWF, Tabac,Cella, and DRH)...but then I got some Mikes and some Barrister and Mann, so now???

Yea, once you get past the phase of having to try EVERYTHING this can get much more affordable.

I'm about 2 1/2 years into this and really not spending a lot. I tried the 2012 sabbatical because I had gone crazy buying hardware, mostly mugs. When I failed that I did a quick stock up of soaps and drugstore aftershaves, but really haven't bought much since then. This year I think I only bought a few pucks of Williams & VDH soaps, a bottle of Pinaud Clubman aftershave, and a Tweezerman brush. I don't need to buy anything for another year or two.

There was some talk in another thread about having the 2014 sabbatical not permitting any personal exemptions. That seems reasonable to me, but I doubt I'll be participating. I found the 2012 one pretty stressful while I was on it, but haven't gone crazy buying stuff since I came off sabbatical. It was just the knowing that I couldn't buy anything that was freaking me out.

I'm in a "clearing out the shave cabinet" phase, so this coming year the only things I plan on buying are software, an open comb Damaskeene (if the price is good), an Empire-style ABC pocket razor handle (if the price is good - yeah, right!), and maybe some razor replates.

I really want to do something like this as well. But I'm planning to move back to America by the end of August. The temptation to get all the goodies that you all have easy access to is going to be overwhelming. So I plan to just keep my den at a very resonable level and PIF away the fat off the top.
