What's new

A first for me estate sale buy today.

I bought a large box of Nat Geo magazines at an estate sale this morning. While emptying the box I found a brown bag with some pretty nice coins inside my first bonus find. Too bad the coins were not gold.

4 peace dollars on the right and 3 Morgan's on the left. I'm counting 10.5 - 90% ounces of silver.

About $275 melt. Make sure you look up the years to see if any are rarer dates or dates of any error coins.

Yep. nice score for a box of Natty G's

I'm seeing a new TV show here.....Estate Hunters!

great find. I'd take them to a coin shop and turn em in. Silver is up around $27 an oz. seems like it's falling. i'd get those babies sold. last year i turned in a bunch of quarters and nickels and dimes. around $10-15 face value, walked out with $90. I think silver was around $35oz then

@Dc you say melt weight what exactly does that mean in coin terms?

@Luke the years are 1923,24,25 and 26

Nice find! Those are 90% silver as some have already stated. I'd hold on to them. Some projections have silver reaching over $50 per ounce in the coming year or two. Of course, I buy silver coins as protection against a dollar collapse so I'd never recommend selling them.

I'm going to throw out a different take on your "find" - you paid for magazines , that's it - the coins were in the box by mistake - return them , those coins won't make a difference in your life - do the right thing !!!

Melt price is the price you will get from a buyer based on the silver melt price. Everything in the metal market is based (gulp) on the price it can get if dropped in a pot and turned into a pure brick. Common date gold and silver coins that are ungraded are typically in the AU or less grades. They hold a slight premium for their rarity but the bulk of their value is in the silver or gold.

Those 1921 Morgan's are common dates. That 1882 - on the back of the Morgan dollars at the base of the eagles tail feathers there will rest the mint mark - is that mint mark a CC perhaps? If so don't let a jerk low ball you on that one. The 1925 peace dollar - a tiny premium if its an S mint mark (located at the 7 o'clock position on the back - fairly small on those coins), same on the others with exception for the 1924. If the 1924 is an S mint mark - a slight premium there too.

Refreshing to see a man with ethics. Your take is the correct one. It makes me want to do something nice for someone today. I am going to activily look for that opportunity.

I'm on the fence on this one. He purchased the contents of the box. No personal pictures or heirlooms that may mean something to someone. It was an estate sale, meaning family is trying to empty out a house/storage, etc.

Do what feels right.

At the very least Gary should reveal his find to the seller & let the seller decide - he/she may not care about the coins or may want to sell them at spot on behalf of the estate - I'm amused at some of the above posts - take DC_MPA for example , he's more interested in showing off his coin knowledge and is oblivious to any other opinions on this "find" by Gary .

my first impression after reading Gary's post was that the coins were buried in the box and were an "extra" surprise bonus - but I wasn't at the sale - maybe the seller disclosed the entire contents but it doesn't sound like it - I agree no heirlooms or sentimental things but we are talking silver here - making up numbers let's say Gary paid 5 bucks for the box and the spot for the silver is $200 - this would make me lean towards thinking the seller had no clue the coins were in there - assuming the seller didn't know about the coins I'd return them and point out the value of the silver - maybe the seller would appreciate the honesty and split the value - that's a chance - but only Gary knows all the facts behind the transaction .

True I am indifferent on what you do. I'll throw in my "what I would do" for fun scenario. This was an estate sale. Someone probably passed away and family is liquidating assets for the cash. If they didn't have the desire to go thru the box, they obviously didn't care enough to know the contents therefore they would greedily profit for selling the coins. If it were me, I'd enjoy the coins, save them and learn about coin collecting. The individual who passed who probably be thrilled about how the mishap has turned someone else into a coin collector just like they obviously were.
