What's new

A couple of old warriors.

I picked up a couple of old military sets in the wild last week
They arent exactly mint condition collectors items, in fact they look like they have been through a war :001_smile

A US Army Khaki set from WWI and a Canadian set from WWII

The razors are in good useable condition and they have "personality" :biggrin1:

Great pair of old warriors. I'm curious about the word under what looks like "Regina" on Ewart's razor. Regina is Latin for Queen but during WWII George VI was on the throne. There wasn't a Regina until Elizabeth took the throne in 1952. Is this a unit designation, like Queen's whatever, or his girl's name? On the other side something has been blanked out above Ewart's name. It was the practice in English military and naval units to sell the kit of a deceased soldier or sailor at auction with the proceeds going to his next of kin. I wonder if that's the reason for the heavy black mark on the left.

It looks to me like the "Regina" is "Regina, Saskatchewan", the town from which Ewart hailed.

Correct, it is Regina SASK as in Saskatchewan
The L91521 is a Saskatchewan regiment, but I havent figured out which one yet

Aha, please pardon my ignorance on Canadian geography. A dullard, I am. I don't even have a complete grasp of the rules for hockey. Down here people who go ice fishing invariably drown. If I could have made out the "Sask" a little better, which looked a little like "Josh", it might have clicked.

I don't want to highjack the thread but actually the 'L91521' is Ewart's service number, it has nothing to do with a unit or regimental affiliation. Up until the SIN was introduced to the Canadian military, each person was given a number when they joined. The letter at the beginning of the number was the the designator of the Selection depot where they joined. Saskatchewan had one depot in the city of Regina and used the letter 'L.' Provinces with larger populations had more selection depots, consequently Ontario and Quebec would have several different prefixes. Interesting that all women were given a 'W' regardless of the Selection depot they attended.

Thanks very much for that info...I was trying to figure out what the L91521 number was and got confused to what service numbers and regimental numbers are.
I was using this link as reference http://www.canadaatwar.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=3172
Is there any way of getting more info on J.W. Ewart from his service number?

Thx
