What's new

A copendium of all the Vintage/discontinued Tallowy soaps.

Well, we all see the regular contenders on eBay for vintage soaps. But every once in awhile a rarity pops up. I'm curious to see all the variety that has existed and with a little luck might be found. Feel free to post opinions. Primarily just collecting all the types though.

I'll start with what I've managed to snag and a few more I've seen but not bought.

Old Spice
Williams (vintage puck)
English Leather
BarberShop
Yardley
Avon (snoopy)
Woods of Windsor Refill (Tallow first)

Colgate puck
Colgate Stick
Williams Stick
Williams Tonsorial
Surrey puck
Penhaligon's (Tallow first)
Wrisley
Paisley's
Tally-Ho [review- unimpressed]
Safari (Ralph Lauren)
Resinol stick
Shemen stick
RickSecker Stick
HIS (House for men)

What else has been snagged or spotted?

I have a puck of vintage "Tally-Ho!" in a wooden bowl. The sticker on the bowl says lavender, but it just smells slightly musty and, well like an old wooden bowl:lol: I don't know the ingredients though. At one point, someone mentioned that it might be re-branded Yardley, but if that's the case, I wouldn't pay $14 for Yardley, nonetheless the $140 some are asking.

How about "Chicago" shaving products, made by Minnetonka Co. I picked up a NOS puck at my local thrift store, back when I first joined B&B. It was actually my first experience using a shaving soap, and by the way it lathered it has to be tallow based. The scent is very "soapy" to me, but also reminds me of how "English leather" cologne smells.

Also, how do you like the R.L. Safari? I just picked up a puck, on the Bay B.I.N. May have overpaid, but I figured that since Tallow shave soaps are going the way of the dodo bird, it would be nice to try. So far vintage, Yardley, Old Spice, and Pen's English Fern have been unobtainable, like champagne wishes and caviar dreams...for a man on a T.V. dinner shaving budget.

I used (up:sad:) a stick of imperial leather that was made long before anyone other than a few degenerate continentals had considered using anything other than animal fat to make soap from. It was wonderful...

Was all Surey tallow based? I got two NOS pucks in a trade about a month ago, but have yet to try them.

I was assuming they would simply be the same formulation as the current production VDH Deluxe.

Seaforth Shave Soap. Tallow based and wonderful, I'm working on a puck right now. No scent after all these years but the performance is fabulous.

The new Woods of Windsor is tallow deprived. This compendium points to the fact that a refromulation conspiracy is taking place

It was liquid hand soap. Had a sticker on the bottom saying "Liquid soap" no reason at all for them to think it was shaving soap. I gave it to my mother for the container. She grew up loving snoopy. The next day my "No rust, chips, problems of any kind" razor arrived covered in pitting. Gotta love eBay.
