As it is a cold morning (5C and hail in October in Australia should be 25C) and having nothing else better to do I thought I would go retro and use a Gillette Mach 3 along with a boar brush and a Mennen/Palmolive shaving stick that I had sitting in the cupboard. While setting up and seeing my Gillette SS with a new Derby Super in it I felt a pang of guilt and decided to do a comparative shave between the two sets of blades. Shaving each half of my face with a different razor I did two passes attempting to use the same technique on each side.
I thought that in use the M3 was initially more draggy and that the Derby actually felt like it was cutting.
After patting dry (none of your fancy post-shave applications for this old bloke) I really couldnt pick any difference between the shaved surfaces. Now, thirty minutes later, I feel that the Derby shaved side is slightly less sensitive than the M3 side. Otherwise the shaving performances of the two razors are the same. The Derby blades work out a heck of a lot cheaper though!
