A Bad shave?

So this morning i woke up and began my normal routine. Cutting literally straight to the point, i began my shave with my bluebeards revenge shavette, with derby extra blade in situ! I had applied pre shave oil and a generous thick lather. I began shaving and immediately cut myself, then again and again. It seems that the far end of the blade is my enemy. I am finding it difficult to manoeuvre the blade and subsequently keep catching myself with the end tip of the blade. I headed directly for my styptic matches for the first time and i think i may have to end up buying a more substantial styptic pencil as although it stings, it really does work well! Does anyone have any advice for me as far as not catching myself with the end of the blade? I am stretching the skin as best i can. Also i am finding it very difficult to change hands and am tending to just use my right hand.

The issue is probly with the angle of the blade in the holder make sure the blade is as even in the holder as possible. Your shaving technique still needs work to it sounds like. Keep the shavette at a lower angle if you are cutting your self on the first pass. Also don't over stretch the skin.

Angle is most likely a serious factor. I have also been reading about "stropping" DE blades a bit before using them. I have yet to try this but it may smooth out the blade a bit and keep it from catching on you. Maybe move to a less aggressive blade as well. The other thing I will bring up is, dont pull the skin. I find that pulling the skin makes it easier to cut and for me creates more irritation. Give it a go without pulling the skin and see how it goes.

Dave,

really? Never heard of stropping a de blade before. I don't own a strop yet as i am yet to buy my first proper straight.
i will try stropping on a belt or bit of news paper.
i tried without stretching the skin this morning and it was a better shave. My angle i think is good and the only problems i am finding is when i catch protruding skin with the end of the blade.
i am sure i will find it easier with a proper straight which i will be buying next week.
thanks

Do a search here for palm stropping I have read about it a few times and I understand the logic behind it but dont do it because I have never had a need to. If you really feel you need to do it back in the day they made these things

I actually have one in my collection but the leather disk is to badly dammaged to make it effectively useable. They are very neat pieces and every two turns of the handle the blade actually flips itself over. Straights are a whole different ball game. I actually find them far more aggressive and much tougher to use than a DE.
