&924;965; The Golden Nib Boar Shaving brush

I already have some Boar brushes VP,Omega,NPV and i wanted something more expensive,i expected better quality so i bough a knot and a handle from TheGoldenNib.
The knot was at 24mm,the handle was appropriate for that dimension and the colour one of my favourites.

Some "maritime use" epoxy glue and everything OK

In the first test i was disappointed but i knew that a Boar need some "grooming" time
Again and again every shaving was a disaster, the knot was absorbing the soap but it never gave back any serious lather
The only appropriate style for this brush was the "painting" style that i don't like it
In circular moves was nothing more that soap and time waist
I never expected to see that from a TGN knob,i have many knobs from this company but i never confronted any problems.

I have some more photos at

Am I the only one with problem with this kind of knot ?

TGN procures their knots from Omega for both 24 and a 27 mm.

Now I have the 27 mm (31mm with cap) and once it was fully broken in it became an absolute lather monster! It was an un-banded bristle knot.

I don't have the one that you have. However, it should equate to the following 24 mm from Omega.

Here is a posting of the 27 mm TGN boar and notice that it is not banded. I think it is a better Omega Knot than the 24 mm.

The knot you have is not made by Omega. I have used all the omega knots that TGN has, and I have used this knot. IDK who makes this knot but it's quality is substandard. I find it equal to VDH and ACE. I can't prove it but I feel that ACE, VDH, and this knot from TGN are all the same low quality boar knot.

Interesting. That would explain the different. I was thinking about ordering a batch of ACE shaving boar brushes since I like their badger knots but now, I will avoid those.

Thanks for the good info.

Dory, he has used this knot and has identified it as an IDK/VDH/ACE knot and not an Omega. I thought, wrongly so, that all the TGN knots were Omega. Since this is not an Omega, I will pass on the IDK/VDH/ACE knot.

Whoa whoa whoa gents! IDK stands for "I Don't Know". VDH is Van Der Hagen and ACE is Ace Shaving. And of course KFC is Kentucky Fried Chicken. Shave on. :biggrin1:

There are so many "reductions" in language (not in brand names) the last few years
It's impossible for a non-american to understand.

Hi all! I thought I'd add my two cents on this brush. I made a shave brush and mach 3 kit out of antlers for my brother. When I finished the brush and had glued the knot in, I googled the experiences of people with this brush. A lot of bad reviews for this one! Well maybe not bad but everyone says it's too stiff and scrubby. So I was really unhappy that I had spent a few hours turning an antler brush and then glued in the worst knot.

Anyway, I have since used this for I think about two or three weeks in a row. I've beat up a lot more lather than actually shaved just to quicken the break in period. After two or so weeks of constant lathering it is a lot better than it was! I use almost boiling water (the hot water button on my coffee machine) and a Proraso soap and it does make a good lather. The hot water really helps a lot! Loads up quickly and holds a good amount of lather.

So long story short, I think if it gets better, it could be quite a good knot!

Here's a pic of the brush and razor handle, not yet finished. I don't have a picture of the polished and finished ones.
