What's new

7 O'CLOCK WEEK (2024) STARTS on the 19th of AUGUST.

7 O'Clock RFB short comb • 7 O'Clock Yellow (2)
Hampshire Wool Fat no.4 • Rubberset N207

Like @InkStainedWretch I took have a short comb RFB 7 O'Clock, this one made for export to France.

This is unlike any of the Gillette RFBs that I own - for my money offering a much smoother shave than it's long comb cousins. It seems ostensibly to be the same razor as the Rotbart RFB, minus corner tabs in the top cap. A truly outstanding shave, matching well with a modern yellow blade and the outstanding Hampshire Wool Fat soap.

There are different NEW batches. The NEW SC has 3 or 4 variants. with different degrees of exposure. Most of the NEW LC are with quite positive exposure and will give a very close shave. Imagine my suprise when after having 3 NEW LC razors I bought a 4th and it has zero exposure. Obviously a rarer batch.

My 4th shave of 7 O’Clock week was a late-night shave on 8/22/24

For this shave I went with a new Indian black ninja, c/o @JCinPA. 2 pass WTG/ATG, 3rd pass XTG chin/jawline with DFS++ face and neck, no irritation or weepers. Noticeably sharper and just as smooth as the Russian green. This blade shaved really well with Mitchell’s Wool Fat. If only the black ninjas were a little cheaper I would be stocking up in a heartbeat.

Pre: hot water and cetaphil
Soap: MWF
Brush: Simpson Duke D2 in best
Razor: Game Changer .68
Blade: Gillette 7 O’Clock Super Platinum Black (1)
A/S: Gillette sensitive skin aftershave gel
Moisturizer: Kiehl’s Facial Fuel

Face: 2.9/3
Neck: 2.9/3
Nicks/irritation and weepers: 3
Zen: 1/1
9.8/10

It always beats me. How do you guys calculate them tenth fractions? :c1:
It’s not very scientific haha.

Honestly I try to wait at least 15-20 minutes after a shave and then think about how the shave felt, then rub my hands over my face/neck. If it’s perfect it’s a 3. Downward departure from there is, unsurprisingly, quite subjective. If less than perfect but no irritation, I will drop .1 if any stubble, another .1 if more than a little stubble, another .1 for any inconsistencies, and see if it matches up with what I feel like. Admittedly I also think back over last few weeks and compare to other shaves.

I initially thought I would use .25 increments but that has its own problems. Inherent in the subjectivity is a component of recency bias and of relative comparison. Coming off of a run of great shaves, a DFS may not be quite as satisfying as if it’s coming off of an Antietam-esque shave.

In a year I’m sure my system will be completely changed.

It was more of a rhetoric question.
Do you realise that you are in fact using a 100 increments scale for your shaves? o_O

7 O'clock Week - Gillette Yellow 7 O'clock SharpEdge

TL;DR -
Kept everything the same (even the picture), better shave, DFS+, blade is smoothing out

Equipment: Ali X3-D2 Razor, Gillette Yellow 7 O'clock Blade (2), Ach Brito Mogno Soap

Gillette_Yellow_7Oclocks.jpg

On To The Shave: Shave #2 typically begins a series of the best shaves a blade will give me, and today's Shave #2 is no exception. I kept everything the same, and the shave was better than yesterday's, smooth and close, right in the DFS+ range. I like Ach Brito, provides an excellent lather, and this combo is working for me.

2nd use of the shiny, 7 0Clock yellow.
Yes, all items are different except the blade.
Razor: Gillette Aristocrat G3, looks newish, said unused by seller??? #6 first use.
Head and face shaves this time I did 3 passes...., more than last time, but the angle in the head wasn't intuitive (despite using similar razors....).
Anyway , this is about that BLADE, close shave minimal irritation and no drama. Blade seems 0-K

7 O'Clock Week 8/23/24
Razor - 40s NDC Super Speed
Blade - Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum (6)
Brush - Proraso/Omega Boar
Soap - Arko
A/S - Skin Bracer
9/10 Solid DFS+

Close and super comfortable shave, this blade seems to still have plenty of life left. I think I want to see just how many shaves I can get out of this one.

Happy Friday All. Very interesting shave today for my first run on the famed 7 O'Clock Black. First impressions, these are definitely sharp and smooth, not overly aggressive. Perhaps like a more refined Astra SP?? The 2 pass shave went well, one nick on the chin (which is preventable for me typically) but otherwise I like what I'm getting from this blade and I'll be back for more. Easy DFS today.

One small note, I love the fragrance and performance of the Black Label What the Puck soap (beautiful slick lather and my face stayed well hydrated) but after several uses I've found it's mildly irritating to my skin. I also don't get on with Cella Red unfortunately, in a similar way (Cella burn?). But I will say, my post-shave feel was quite nice today, aided no doubt by the pairing of Thayer's and Skin Bracer. A winning combo in my book.👍

So what have we learned here after a week of 7 O'Clocks (he says to himself)? Are there any clear winners? I can tell you that for myself, I'll be returning to the Yellows and Blacks because there's something interesting with both that bears repeating. An inherent rightness? I dunno, but I will say that per @ivan_101 I will be on the lookout for the earlier 2010 SharpEdges for comparison. I'd also like to just say thank you Ivan for putting this together. It was I think a worthy showcase for an underserved group of blades.

All 7 o'clock SharpEdge are for the Middle East. And have always been. There are no 7 o'clocks for Western markets. It is just that previously the SharpEdge had inscriptions in English on them, now they have mostly (or only) Arabic.

But isn't this true for most every DE blade made today?

I imagine that there are more of these blades in Europe than in the U.S. due to proximity?

Razor: Fatip Piccolo
Blade: Indian Gillette 7o'clock Permasharp Stainless (2nd use)
Brush: Omega 10810
Cream: The Body Shop Maca Root & Aloe
Alum: Nice Cool
Aftershave: Adidas Ice Dive

Blade felt tuggy on the first shave, and was rougher and tuggier on the second, so chucked it. Not the closest shave and some irritation from trying to pick up patches.
