$66 Old Spice SS in Mug - a new record?

Yep...I was watching it too. Can't believe it went that high. Doesn't look any different from any other NIB Old Spice mug/soap. It is simply crazy......and I thought 35-40 bucks was nuts!

Wow, $66 dollars for unscented shaving soap. Where do I sign up? :scared:

I have thought about pulling the trigger on vintage Old Spice, I am curious if it lives up the hype, but I wouldn't pay the kind of prices it's been commanding just so I can experiment.

Besides, the wonderful scents of soap/cream is a huge part of the overall experience.

That is crazy! But I also realize my credibility on this topic is shot!:001_smile

I don't know about your credibility being shot. While I've not tried a puck of Old Spice to compare, Yardleys seems like a completely different story. Even if performance between the two was equal, the smaller supply of Yardleys could explain and perhaps justify the higher costs for some. I'm just glad I found my Yardleys for $5.00. :blushing: I'm keeping my fingers crossed for finding some Old Spice someday.

on the picture looking down on the mug there is a piece there that I don't have for my old spice mug, not glue. I was just curious because i would like something that holds the puck a little higher up.

Hmmmm, my NOS late thirties/early forties mug in the wood veneer box should probably move to the safe....

It's sad, really. The stuff was meant to be shaving soap for the working stiff, and now it's starting to get crazy expensive.

I think in part we are victims of our own success. We bang the drum about how good the old stuff is, and people listen.

Even NOS Williams is getting attention in online auctions, and I expect as budding wet shavers start balking at the going rate for vintage stuff like Old Spice and Yardley, the less hyped vintage tallow goodies will start getting more attention.

In fact, a nice Williams soap in a wooden Currier and Ives bowl just went for $44 counting shipping. It's a nice collectible, but also listed in the completed items is a single, garden variety vintage puck that went for ten bucks, shipping included.

It really does make one wonder at what point somebody in the current corporate world is going to say "Hey, look at that...if we aren't willing to bring that old stuff back, we'll grant a licence to a small guy willing to make some tallow formula soap".

Probably never happen, but if people are willing to plunk down $74 bucks for what really amounts to a coffee cup full of soap, imagine what what would happen if P&G or Combe put out a product that was ninety percent as good in a cheap mug that had an old timey logo on it and asked for a third of that.

I was watching it as well....

I believe when a mug/soap in the original box goes for that price, then it's a collector buying it and not someone that's gonna put the brush to it.

I bought some a couple of weeks ago for $56, including shipping, but I got 3 refills and a mug with more than half of another puck in it. Not to shabby of a deal! (All 3 pucks are still wrapped and have their full scent))

Wow. And I thought it was nuts when I paid 12 and 13 dollars for a couple of slim Gilette adjustables five or six years ago. As someone who has owned a cake of this stuff, new in the mug with red plastic cover(I'm guessing 60's era), I can tell you I would NEVER pay more than ten dollars or so for the soap. I traded mine to Joel a few years ago for what I cannot remember but I think I got the better of the deal.:001_tt2: It was okay in performance, but the scent was completely gone. I gather this is normal occurence for this soap once it reaches a certain age. As always YMMV but I would never pay any sort of "collectors money" for Old Spice shave soap. Spend $26 and buy a fantastic cake of AOS shave soap. It leaves Old Spice in the dust. There. I said it. I await the flame throwers.
