'51 black tip super speed

ill start off by saying it's the best shave i've ever had! i started by purchasing an Edwin JaggerDE89L and had pretty good success with it and proraso shave shave soap(sensitive skin). Inspired by shaving the old school way I purchased the 51' black tip, a 61' flare tip super speed, and a 30's The New style open comb(short comb) style. The New was the first i tried with a feather and man was that awesome compred to the DE89L. The super speed with a shark blade dominated them both though! I really can't wait to try the flare tip. I can't believe everyone doesnt shave with a DE. good bye to the cartridge crap and hello to real shaving. makes me wonder why somebody ever tried to fix a style of shaving that was never broken??

yeah the answer to your question is money, how many improvements can be made to a razor! Gillette come up with a new one every other week it seems, with a price increase just as often.

I too have gone from a EJ to a SS, only difference is mine is a blue tip, too mild for some but just right for me.

ive been reading about the dif tip colors. do the really indicate dif levels of aggressiveness? i also just loosen my black tip a little for a more aggressive shave if i need it. but it shaves excellent fully closed as well. any info on the flare tip compared to the color tipped ones?

yes the colours do relate to the closeness of shave, I believe not only is more blade showing on the more aggressive SS but they are also heavier too, which all makes a difference, the SS flare tip is quite a bit heavier, whereas the blue tip is made from aluminium, the flare is made from steel I believe.

I'm no expert just bits I have picked up, so don't quote me ;-)

the weight can alter the perceived aggressiveness of the shave if you shave the same way with a different razor. blue tip is lighter than a red tip, with the black in between. heaver = more aggressive.

that said, they're all pretty mild if you know you're not scraping paint. if you're looking for a little more aggression sometimes, maybe try an adjustable. 99 + 1 times out of a hundred, I'd rec. that over adjusting blade/head geometry by loosening the lock-down.

But maybe that's just because I forgot to lock-down the doors one day maybe 4-5 shaves into wet-shaving and my face was a disaster before I realized what was going on. You don't want to go there. :thumbdown

thanks for the replies guys. i shaved with the flare tip today and it was also amazing. so much for this being cheaper than cartridges cause now i want to own all the gillette vintage models. can anyone tell me about the slim adjustable or any adjustable gillette for that matter? or maybe even the tech?

Caddy, check out the ShaveWiki if you haven't already. You'll probably find more information than you ever wanted to know. :thumbup1:

I say go for it (but it's gonna be expensive)! I started out with a Slim, then picked up a Super Adjustable, and finally got a Fat Boy (because you just have to have one). I find myself bouncing back and forth between the Slim and the SA pretty much each time I change out the blade. I can't put my finger on it, but there is just something about the SA that is about 2% better for me (YMMV), but then again, the Slim is a nickel plated piece of art from another time. Something else I just started doing is doing a final polishing pass with my Super Speed after I've done my 3 passes with the adjustable and I am getting some really great results. Something about the non aggressive blade angle of the SS that lets me polish away with impunity.
