5 Questions

Hi guys, I have, as per the title, 5 questions.

Firstly, I know most people here are based in the US, but on the off chance someone viewing this is UK based, do you know of any good alterations tailors in Birmingham or Oxford? I need new trousers, but I have significant differences between my two legs, and the last tailor I went to I wasn't pleased with at all, so yeah, any recommendations would be nice

Secondly, and this will be easier to answer regardless of location, where sells good trousers? I'm on the look out for both wool and cotton ones. Not necessarily too formal. Something that could be paired with, say an OCBD and a v neck sweater, or a shirt/tie/sportcoat look, looking preferably below £100 per pair (that would be my very top). Sub question within this: I'm considering moving toward a fuller leg next time I purchase trousers. I was always someone who liked a slimmer leg, but I've noticed that having quite a slim leg leaves you in a bit of a pickle in regard to trouser length: I really dislike a big break in my trouser leg, but if you have a very slim leg, the hem hits higher up on your instep, meaning that in order to have a small/no break, you're going to be showing some sock as you walk, which isn't great. Yeah, so basically, moving from a slimmer cut to a fuller one, good idea or bad idea?

Thirdly, where does good OCBD's? These are my favourite piece of clothing for everyday wear (my usual outfit consists of a button down, v neck sweater, trousers/chinos and brouges/desert boots), and I unfortunately can't find anywhere decent. Price here preferably below £70

Fourthly, I'm also on the look out for some v neck sweaters, preferably lambswool or merino. Problem is my preferred place has stopped doing them now. I have a couple of Brooks Brothers ones, but we don't really have many stores in the UK so they're hard to get hold of.

Fifthly, I have a ball coming up this summer, and I need a dinner suit. Who's a good reliable maker of these that sells them off the rack? Not entirely sure of my budget here, but definitely below £500.

Sorry to bombard you guys with so many questions. If you can't answer all of them, don't worry, any help would be appreciated!

Can't help on the tailor, sorry.

If I buy a suit with a too-full leg I get it tailored to slimmer (NOT skinny fit!) - then I choose the width.

For your other q's - I'm not sure of your usual stores/preferred makers, but have you considered M&S? Their Autograph & Sartorial ranges can be really, really nice...I was blown away by the quality of the Sartorial shirt range.

I don't have any answers so forgive me for asking a question. I don't know the true origin of Oxford cloth, but given your current location one might ask are you not at ground zero for obtaining OCBD?

On the dinner suit; try charity shops and second-hand stores, in an area like Oxford you are quite likely to find good quality used ones that may only have been worn once or twice.
IMHO, a little worn-in looking is better than shiny new in a DJ; it makes you look like you attend that kind of event all the time. In my experience, the shabbier a DJ a gentleman is wearing, the more interesting the stories he has to tell.

Thanks guys.

Stevie - I will definitely take M&S into consideration

Stillshaving - unfortunately, no. I'm not sure of the origins of Oxford cloth either, but if it did have anything to do with the city, there's very little sign of it now.

Larry - Thanks for that, didn't think about charity shops, will definitely try and have a look around when I get some time free from studying.

Have a look at Slaters they have stores in various places in the UK, not sure how close to oxford though, but they do good suits and and the tailoring i got done was good. I believe they also have a variety of other stuff which might answer more than one of your questions.
