4711 as Aftershave

I saw in the reviews that some guys do this. I guess I would use it when I want a nice scent that wouldn't conflict with a cologne.

I already have Florida Water and do this sometime. Is there enough of a difference between Florida Water and 4711 to make this plan worthwhile?

And for those who use it, does it work as an aftershave at all?

4711 makes an aftershave specific product.

i have it and like it, but don't think it's nearly as effective as some of the other inexpensive products.

I've used 4711 cologne as an aftershave many times. It works good - pretty high alcohol content so it's got a healthy burn to it, but I like it the scent fades in 10 minutes or so.

have you ever tried florida water? how does it compare to that? i'm curious if it's worth buying since I have access to the FW

I think that it has a very different frangrance than Florida water. The M&L Florida Water has a minty, herbal scent; the 4711 is an old fashioned, light citrusy fragrance. It might be me, but they don't remind me of each other at all. At the same time, both are fine for a light, alcohol-based AS.

4711 does offer a couple of different choices in true after shaves. There is a chunky bottle, reminiscent of AV Ice Blue, filled with a iight blue lotion. I haven't tried it, but I see it around a lot--very reasonably priced. 4711 also makes an Eau de Portugal AS--a scent that's a lot like Pinaud's hair tonic or any other Portugal. I think that it's fantastic and I use it quite a bit. Unfortunately, I never see it in US stores--I found a bottle in Japan this summer.

I love the 4711 aftershave. Unfortunately I only have half a bottle left and can't find it anymore:frown: The EDC is nice as well and easily accessable here.

thanks for the info. i am planning to buy a bunch of things from rasage poulin tomorrow--Trumper Ajaccio Violets cologne, Trumper Spanish
Leather aftershave, Booster June Clover aftershave, Speick deo stick...and I figured I'd throw in the 4711 EdC while I'm at it (they don't carry the 4711 AS).

I've been reading up on the history, the real history, of 4711 and Eau de Cologne. Fascinating. So the product known as 4711 is the offspring of a con-man and litigation, and a brilliant marketing strategy. As time goes on, the lies become accepted and celebrated. I'll be glad to try this, even though it isn't really the original.

In the reviews I found the original, "real" EdC is still made and their website is here:

I wonder how the Farina family feels about 4711 nowadays. Truly amazing.

Saw a set - aftershave and cologne - in one of the Omaha
TJ Maxx stores Monday. Sorry that it is in Omaha and you probably aren't. Didn't notice the price.

Bigelow in NYC carries the AS and I believe the EDT as well. THe AS is $11 a bottle. As mentioned it has a light, citrusy scent that fades very quickly.

I like 4711 as a light aftershave and splash - but it does dissipate pretty quick - so it's good for a light scent.

I bought mine on Amazon.

You need an EXCUSE to hit J&R and the discount malls?!:wink:

Well, I don't smoke, so I do need an excuse to go to JR's most of the time.

I went, checked out what they had. I must say, Wingnut, you are right about the Royall Bay Rum. That stuff smells fantastic! It would have a fight with PCVIBR in my cabinet over which gets to be on my face! LOL But, alas! I could bring myself to pay $25 for it. *sigh* I sampled the Tabac *cough, wheeze, ugh*. I also passed on the 4711. Since I liked the Royall BR, I decided to whiff the other Royall AS. The mandarin smells like some citrus cleaner, the Lyme smells like lime Skittles, and the Spice just didn't smell good at all. I guess I'll be stick with the less expensive stuff.

If you liked the Royall BR but (like me) it's on the expensive side for you, give Domenica a try. Very similar in scent, but less than half the price per ounce. If there's an Orvis store near you, a bottle can be had there for around $15 for something like 12 oz. Thumbs up with your evaluation of the other Royall scents; they just didn't do it for me either, but the BR is pretty darn good.

I agree with your assessment of Tabac. When I went to J&R and smelled it my first reaction was, "OK, I can definitely cross that one off of my list!" Another rather cheap find at J&R for me was Raw Vanilla: a one-trick pony - no scent progression at all really, but if you like it it's only $5 for a 3.5 oz bottle there.

I saw the Raw Vanilla, but by that time I was burnt out. I am an AS guy, and don't normally go for cologne. I did take a whiff of the Drakkar, and liked it. The Tabac was bad, at least to me. I looked at my wife and said, "Smell this!". The look on her face was priceless.
