The head profiles are different between the two, so I would expect some variation in the way each shaves.
Good to know. The 40's SS is the best shave I've had so far. I'm very happy about my accidental purchase of three of them (two undated and all in pristine condition). I think I've found my shaver for life.
hmm... you should try a Ranger Tech.
and then a Senator....
and then the '34-ish Aristocrat...
keep walking it back... the shaves get better and better as you go further and further back in time!
Not sure. I tried the ball end tech, New, and Old and wasn't impressed.
Still haven't managed to snag a Senator! I should watch the BST too, probably find one there easier (or bid higher on eBay, I've been outbid on 3 or 4). I do have a Sheraton, so I know the shave. Just need one in nickel!OK... then the Ranger Tech & the Senator at least! I'm not sure why [suggestibility my rational side says] but the Ranger Tech gives me a better shave than even the 40s superspeed.
And the open-comb Senator is a go-to for me.
[suggestibility suggestibility suggestibility]
I also think the knurled grip may play a part as well. The 40's era SS is just the best combination of weight, angle, and grip I've ever used.

I do agree he should sample others further back as well, a NEW, a New Improved, and at least one variant of Old Type. The Old Type is my sentimental favorite, whether a Double Ring, Single Ring, ABC Pocket Edition, Big Fellow or Bulldog.
The New Improved, in the DeLuxe model, is thought by many to be the best there ever was.
And I also agree with your suggestion of a Ranger Tech and 34ish Aristocrat. All great stuff there!
It may be your favorite forever. It's a great razor, and many do love them (love mine too, especially the '47, which on mine has a slightly different profile than the rest of the 40's Super Speeds). It's all good stuff! But don't judge the other Gillettes by the Tech (which I also like, though it's mild and while getting a comfortable shave is easy, getting a really close shave takes more effort). Other vintage Gillettes really do stand above, and any fan of vintages owes it to themselves to at least try a few others.
