40 years later - mushroom soup

Growing up I could not bear the smell of mushroom soup. Typical of what happens in real life my five year younger brother decided that this was his favourite soup. As the older brother I don't recall being asked what I wanted for lunch but I do recall lunches where it was mushroom soup chosen by my brother.

Over the years I began to accept mushrooms. First on all dressed pizza, heck it is just easier to order pizza toute garnie which in Quebec Canada includes mushrooms. For the last twenty years (since I was married) I've been having mushrooms sauteed in butter with eggs for breakfast, in stir fry dishes, with curry, raw with dips. Many different mushrooms.

Yet I could not face mushroom soup.

So, Sunday, I ask my wife . . . what would you like for lunch. We have tomato, potato, and . . . heck I had to admit it . . . some cream of mushroom soup your mom brought.

"Oh" she says . . . "mushroom would be nice."

I'm doomed . . . I think. Oh well.

So I open the can, add water . . . start heating it.

Hmmmm... this smells kinda nice. Maybe if I add a little Parisian I could actually eat this.

It was great.

I can't believe I left it this long.

Not sure how germane to your post is, but as a kid I hated mushrooms. Now, I eat them all kinds of ways, raw in a salad, enoki mushrooms wrapped in bacon, sauteed with garlic, how many ways are there? Mushroom soup, plenty of garlic and cream, mouth-orgasm.

Similar for me too. Same with olives, pickles, and some other things. Mushroom soup was the hold out.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
I can remember, at the age of 5, my grandmother frying mushrooms and me eating them as a sandwich. Somewhere around the age of 8 I became disgusted by them. If I smell or taste I feel like retching. I don't know what has caused this, and should I ever go to Italy I may have a hard time eating.

My wife loves cream of mushroom soup.
I don't like it at all.
I have nothing against mushrooms, i just can't do the soup.

Mmmmm. I love it! See if you can find Julia Child's recipe from Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It is basically a soubise suffused with mushrooms.

Going to have our anniversary at a local speak easy steak house here in town that serves one of the best mushroom soups ever. We love this place for that reason, along with the steaks that are reasonably priced the service and dark rich wood that's accents the place.

The one great tip I heard about mushrooms is to cook them until the house smells like a damp forest floor. Takes at least 35 minutes, and more likely an hour. Just butter and maybe olive oil and the shrooms and nothing else. I tried Julia's version but the forest gnomes win. Of course, you could use her recipe with just this one change. Personally, I prefer no flour in my cream soups.

Try them try them . . . you will see. Try the mushrooms up a tree. You might like them here or there. Maybe like them anywhere.

Exactly my feelings back when I was that age. Saute some button mushrooms and have them with the next steak you have.

Na you don't have to. I'm working on expanding fish I will eat. I've always been ok with Salmon and Tuna . . . I've probably had more fish in the last 2 months than in the last 6 years . . . I'm liking haddock.
