What's new

$40 rhodium plating for each razor 10 razor minimum.

A local plater told me hes dont safety razors before and would replate my razors for 100 a piece but if i did 10-20 hed charge $40 a piece. Ive seen his work with jewelry and its great but im afraid of doing a razor with him cause ive never seen his work with them but he knew all about them cause i quized him a little and he knows his stuff. should i go all out with 10 razors for $40 ea or just do the 1 for 100 and see his work. also his turn around is 2 days.

Personally, I'd go for the 10 for $400. If you get half done right you could still feel pretty good about the price. Razors are fairly cheap, plating is a little hard to justify most of the time unless it's just a really great razor. I want to get some done, but which ones? I rotate my favorites so I don't ever seem to really settle on one long enough to justify the expense. Doing 10 at a time would help me decide which ones to do and at $40 a pop I could live with that price. If he totally messed up a couple of easy to replace razors, I could live with that outcome.

Has he never done razors or just doesn't have any of his razor work to show you?

Can you negotiate a middle ground - i.e., what if you do the one for $100 and it basically ruins the razor? A middle ground would be something more like, "...let's do one for $70 (the midpoint between the $100 and $40), and if I agree that your work is up to the razor restorer company's work, I will guarantee you another 12."

Your cost scenarios:

Work is bad $100 for first razor, $0 for subsequent work

Work is good
$100 for first razor
$40 x 10 more = $400
Total of $500 to do 11 razors (assuming he would make you do an additional 10 and not 9)

Middle Ground I
$70 first razor
$40 x 10 more = $400
Total of $470 for 11 razors.

Middle Ground - II
$40 first razor
$45 x 10 more = $450
Total of $490 for 11 razors.

If you have 12 razors total, he ends up making more, and you get to test his skill for $40.

He claims hes done a dozen razors in the last 5 years for clients but none to show me, he never did an adjustable before but hes done a couple.

I honestly wouldn't give him 10 to do at once without seeing the quality of work. Jewelry is a whole different animal compared to vintage razors. I would listen to the post above and maybe ask him to do the first one for 40 dollars, and 9 others for 45 if the work is good. See if he'll do that.

His work is not proven when it comes to razors so I wouldn't do it and especially if they are adjustables.

with out seeing him or his shop or his work it is hard to say. How long has he been in buiseness ?
I would be cairfull with a ajustable, there are mechanisms and majic in there that might be fouled up.
my gut feeling is no.

If I really wanted my razors all plated in rhodium and had the cash I would start out with one razor to see how it turns out. Before that though, I would ask what I should expect the results to be and exactly which processes he includes for the price. If he is going to strip the old plating off, smooth out any scratches and put a nice durable plating on then $40 is a steal. If he does shoddy work and the plating is of poor quality then $100 is a tough lesson, but a lot better than $400. If you decide to throw him a bone take some hi-res pictures before and after and then you can get some qualified opinions on the job provided.

Wow, that was tough to read. I stopped at what "you'd" call two sentences. I gave up trying to figure out what you attempted to write..
