36 Cheap American Beers, Ranked!

Pretty funny list of 36 domestic "cheap" beers ranked on Deadspin.

"I realize you're going to spend Independence Day happily drinking whatever cold adult beverage you're served, because you're polite and you're an alcoholic. And I trust you'll have a fine old time no matter what you drink. But that doesn't mean America's brews are all the same. The list below breaks down 36 of them, from worst to least-worst. "

IMO his rankings are way off. Narragansett is a decent beer but to put Coors number 3? I find it too watery and tasteless for me. Same as for the lite beers. Plus, I think Yuengling is a good choice. Curious what other B&Bers think of his ranking.

I would move Yuengling, Miller High Life, Old Milwaukee, and possibly even Busch way up the list, and move Schaefer and Pabst way down. I do agree with him that original Coors is decent, but would not rank it as high as he did.

Kind of like asking which one of these is the prettiest.

I was surprised the author didn't use the term "badger urine" in any of the taste profiles...he must not be a traditional shaver. Having mis-spent a small part of my youth in upstate NY, I can confirm that it takes no imagination to describe "Jenny" cream as having been made by some member of the weasel family.

There is a Batch 19 from Coors it was brewed Pre-Prohibition style. More body and more taste. I usually stay away from the big name American beers because I hate watered down pilsners. I bought a sixpack of Batch 19 without knowing it was Coors. I was enjoying my second bottle of it by the time I decided to read the label and to my shock it was Coors!. I prefer Micro Brewer beer, Guinness, or Shiner Bock when drinking beer. My first choice is always Guinness or another stout.

I like Rolling Rock when there isn't any other beer that I am willing to drink. I would have ranked it at 12 not 35.

Rolling Rock is pretty good, and cheaper than Miller Lite, my normal everyday beer. I like the bottle. The painted on label is classy.

I wouldn't take a Deadspin article too seriously, especially after reading the "article". BTW, the Strohs made now isn't the same Stroh's beer from years ago (Fire-Brewed in Detroit). While it wasn't a great beer back then, it did have a bit of character and could be a decent cheap beer on tap--from a place who properly maintained their taps and lines. Plus Strohs spelled backward is Shorts.

As for Rolling Rock, once they closed the Latrobe Brewery (but still used Latrobe on the bottle) I stopped drinking it. Never great, but one of the lighter industrial beers I thought was OK if very, very cold. Still, if I could get the Pony bottles, I might buy a case. I LOVE those little bottles.

I'm glad to see he gave a bit of love to Grain Belt. Last year when we were touring the Great Lakes, I had my first one of these and I thought it was darned decent. A good day was a few of these and a cashew cheeseburger in the Anchor Bar in Superior, WI. I would drink Grain Belt regularly if it was available in Texas. But, then again, I'm not a connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination, so YMMV.

If it was an legit list, I'd be surprised Leinenkugel didn't make it. My recollection is, that wasn't bad cheap beer.

Agree about the lack of Hamm's...the best 30 pack $13 can buy! And Natural Light is better than Genesee Cream Ale. Dream on!
