The market for custom handles has expanded that accommodate most budgets. I've really enjoyed my Weber Bulldog handle and have had an appetite for others.
I recently acquired a GS1 custom handle and when I first held it, was really impressed with the look, weight, and feel of the handle. It's constructed from marine grade 316 stainless and weighs about 80 grams, the thing is hefty. The knurling is pronounced and won't slip from the soapiest of hands. The thing looks like some sort of an assault weapon round. It's well constructed and made in the USA.
First impressions are important but the proof is in the shave.
I've been busy with home projects and hadn't shaved for a few days. Even my wife, who takes my BBS shaves for granted said I looked like a bum. I figured a good way to try the handle out was going big and giving some of my favorite 2 piece heads a shot.
I chose my favorite head/blade combos for this experiment.
-FaTip head with a Gillette Rubie
-Merkur 1904 CC head with a KAI
-triangular Tech head with a Feather
My brush was an M&F along with some Arlington soap. My shave consisted of 4 passes (WTG, XTG, ATG, polish pass)
This is how it went:
Pass 1: You can feel the heft right away. This plowed most of my 3 day growth. Finding the angle was no problem. Since it's pretty hefty, extra attention must be made to not push too hard. However, due to the thick knurling, I can gingerly hold it to guide it along my face.
Pass 2: I felt the feedback of this pass especially using the KAI on the Merkur head. Again, holding it gently did wonders.
Pass 3-4: This is where the handle shined. It's balance is ideal for ATG passes. The handle has a "wide waist." By that I mean that the handle has a wide area where you can hold it and it's not top or bottom heavy.
I also did a little buffing and got myself a BBS shave!!!!!
Overall impression:
This handle stands out and would be a great addition or first custom handle under $40. It fit all 3 of the heads mentioned and I assume will fit an R41 as well. I felt that it looked best with the FaTip head (that thing looks best in whatever handle you throw at it).
The color on this handle is a bit more matte than the Weber bulldog. To me it's a nice contrast but may be a detriment to some. Also, there was a bit of dark residue on my hands when I was playing with it. It's most likely due to rouge used during the last part of turning the handle. No problem though. It came off quickly with a quick spray and brush with Scrubbing Bubbles.
