2nd round Soap Pass-Around

Thanks, I have 733. So I wanted to re-read your thoughts. I liked the old time peppermint scent - its spot on for those crumbly after dinner mints I'd get at christmas time.

I didnt seem to get the moisturizing effects I've seen claimed by many people. I wasnt sure if it was just this scent. I've got 3 more scents and I'm not sure how hard I want to try given that they are no longer in production.
I had forgotten about the fact that they went out of business when i tried the soap. I typically don't want to try things I can't get if I like them. The scent was nice for peppermint, not real strong which is a plus for me.

I wouldn't say it was moisturizing, but it didn't dry my skin out, which I find a lot of soaps do for me.

Overall it was a nice shave and it is kind of rounding out my shave selection.

Sorry for being MIA guys. I've had some extra long days at work this week so shaving has been completely utilitarian. And today was spent framing a house with Habit for Humanity so I'm pretty wore out.

Updates will come tomorrow. No matter how sore I am after today. [emoji4]

This is kind of long but after being so behind this week I didn't want to short change the all important sniff test.

722 – I like this soap maker they produce a soap that has performance and latherability characteristics reminiscent of MDC; in fact I have several of their soaps. However, I don’t like the scent on this one at all. To be fair though it’s Sandalwood and I’ve never liked any Sandalwood soap I’ve tried.

734 – One of my all-time favorite brands. Unfortunately they are out of business now but I did stock up on several of my favorite scents. The scent in the box isn’t one of my favorites though so it will make it past me. It’s more of a cologne style smell and I generally don’t care for those. I’d definitely recommend the brand to others though so if you like cologne scents and aren’t worried about never being able to buy the brand again I’d suggest you give this serious consideration. It’s a great soap.

735 – I’ll I can say is UGHH I’ll pass!

736 – I absolutely love the marzipan/almond smell of this soap!!! It’s not one of my best brands but it has very solid performance that combined with the scent make it a hard to beat package. Don’t’ worry though, this one will make it past me, I already have 10 containers stashed away and two other brands (one priced lower and one prices WAY higher) that have the same scent. I think I have enough soap with this scent to last me 3-4 years of daily shaving. :biggrin1:

737 – This is the same brand as 737 and is another great scent. It’s one of the very few cologne style scents I like. It’s very hard to describe, it leads with a spicy cologne smell but has undertones of lemon. One of my favorites and I have several pucks of it along with the balm and several bottles of the ORIGINAL release of the aftershave (yes, the one that was co-released with Fine Accoutrements).

739 – Same brand as 722. Another cologne scent; one that I could tolerate but there are several other scents by this maker that I prefer and own.

746 – Great brand with scents that are typically very complex which results in them being very polarizing. However if you can find scent in this bran that you like you’ll be rewarded with a great performing soap and likely a scent that no other brand will come close to. This soap is one of only two Bay Rum soaps I’ve ever liked the scent of; they typically smell like pumpkin pie to me (which I don’t like). This one is a possible take.

747 – Same brand as 747. It’s a complex and very unique take on a scent that almost every maker has of which almost no two are the same. The name of this one would make Giovanni proud.

748 – Not one of my favorite brands. The performance is okay but nothing spectacular. My biggest dislike is the scents from this maker. I’m not saying they are bad, in fact some of them smell really good, the issue is that the smells have an artificial element to them that somehow feels cheap are lacking in quality. To be clear, I’m not saying that they are cheap or of poor quality, it just smells that way to me. This particular one smells like Wrigley’s mint chewing gum.

749 – Same brand as 748. This one is supposed to have a Citrus component to it but I don’t smell it at all.

752 – I’ve never tried this brand and have never smelled any soap like this; it’s very unique. To me it kind of smells like a high school or college natatorium. That may not sound very appealing but it’s kind of appealing to me. I’m going to give this one a try.

754 – Another brand that has some characteristics that are similar to MDC. This one kind of reminds me of a dreamsicle or an Orange Julius. I like citrus smells a lot plus the soap from this particular maker lasts a long time and I have several this brand in other scents.

755 – This maker is the only other one to produce a Bay Rum scent that I like. Now this one is not their Bay Rum soap, it’s a citrus scent, but as described earlier by someone it has a faint Bay Rum type quality. Maybe it’s the spicy top note? Now what it is missing for me is the citrus, instead I get something that is more forest like. I may give this a try just to give the brand a shot.

756 – Never tried this brand but it seems to have a small following. This is the brands trademark scent and I like it a lot. In my review above for 747 I said that it was very unique, well maybe I spoke a bit too soon. The scent of this is very reminiscent of 747 but not quite a strong or spicy and with a little bit more lemon.

757 - Another brand I’ve never tried but I’ve read good things about it. I can’t say that I care for the scent. It makes me think of a lemon or orange scented industrial cleaner.

758 – This soap has an interesting smell it’s kind of a mint and berry smell to it. It’s quite unique and reminds me of something from my childhood that I can’t quite place. Maybe a candy?

I'll get through performance tests as quickly as possible for the brands I've not tried and get the box moving as soon as possible. I'll probably skip the "lather porn" pics this time around for speeds sake.

Who do I have to kill to get in on this?

You'll need to get your post count up to 100 before you'll get the box sent to you though. You can still sign up but you'd have to choose a later spot on the list to give yourself some time. There are a lot of threads here that ask what razor, blade or soap you used each day. Those can help raise your post count rather quickly as can just getting involved here.

Time for some updates…..

756 – This is a brand I’ve wanted to try for quite a while. They have a lot of interesting sounding scents. Performance wise it was pretty average as compared to my experience with the other brands in the box. Now that may not sound very good it’s actually a testament to the quality of the soaps that are in the box. There are some extremely high performing soaps in the box so it’s hard for something to stand out. So average in this case is quite good. It lathered well and I got a great shave. My only concern was that the post shave feel was a little sticky/tacky. I’m wondering if that was my fault though; maybe I didn’t rinse well enough. I enjoyed the scent it’s lemony. Maybe a better smelling version of Arko (which I don't mind). :001_smile

755 – Another good performer. I didn’t care for the scent though. It’s supposed to be lime but I just didn’t get that. I liked the performance enough to know what I’d happily take this brand in a different scent as this company makes one of the only two Bay Rum scents I like.

747 – I like this and own this brand, I’ve even owned this specific scent before. It’s been awhile since I had it tough so I wanted to compare it to 756 given how similar the scents are. If I was picking between the too it would be a tough call. Performance of this one was better (especially the post shave feel) but I slightly prefer the scent of 756.

752 – Never tried this brand and I’ve been a bit back and forth on the “natatorium” scent. I wasn’t sure I was going to try it but decided to give it a shot as I could always get a different soap if I liked the brand. All that said I was pleasantly surprised at the smell. It was fresh, clean, and unlike anything I own or have tried. Performance was great too. It’ one of the easiest lathering soaps I’ve ever tried; coming close to MDC levels of ease. Post shave feel was great too. It’s a pretty soft soap, somewhere between RazoRock and Caties Bubbles, so I suspect a tub wouldn’t last long.

One more soap to try and then I’ll get my adds/takes approved and ship the box.

Nice reviews - thanks!

Last review.

757 - I wanted to give this brand a shot since I've never tried it before. I mentioned in my sniff test that I didn't care for the scent but I was interested in the performance because they have several other scents I could try. Overall this one is not a winner for me. My opinion on the scent has not changed. It was more muted after lathering but I still don't like it. Performance during the shave was okay nothing spectacular but acceptable. The post shave feel is where this soap really loses it for me. It's one of the most, or possibly the most, drying soaps I've used. There are other soaps out there that are fairly drying that don't bother me because they leave me with more of "clean" feeling face that balances out the dryness; MDC and WSP are great examples of this. However 757 was just plain drying and left my face feeling itchy for the first half of the morning. I don't see this brand, in any scent, being in my future.

I've contacted the next participant and once my adds/takes are approved I'll post some final thoughts.

My take was #752; Chiseled Face Summer Storm. I'm a bit surprised that this is what I ended up with. It's not the normal type of scent I would choose as I typically go for citrus smells. I was intrigued by the scent after the sniff test but still didn't think that's what I would end up with. Ultimately it came down to the performance being great and the scent being different than anything I own while intriguing. Maybe I'll never buy another tub but I'll give this one a shot.

As for my add...... it is numbered 759 and I think it's an "exquisite" addition to the box. :001_smile I'll honestly be surprised if it makes it past one or two participants without being taken.

This soap is based on another brand that some would say falls into the legendary performance category. However the scent of that base soap is very controversial; think Arko levels of controversy and debate. In fact one of the esteemed members of this passaround recently referred to the base soaps scent as "old lady's hand bag". Now thankfully the scent on #759 has been updated to my favorite take on an american classic and smells NOTHING like a handbag! I look forward to reading other's opinions on this and hope it finds a good home.

I've contacted Horvy and we're making arrangements to meet for an in-person hand-off. He and I work within 10 minutes of each other.

Thank you to everyone for their great contributions to this passaround. There are some awesome soaps in the box.
